Keywords/phrases: Bitcoin Core roadmap, off-chain scaling solutions, Segregated Witness, user acceptance, soft forks vs. hard forks, big blocks vs. small blocks. This debate about how we scale is about prioritisation and sequencing, which one goes first. The Ethereum hard fork, 70/30 split causing replay attacks for exchanges. Hard forks are dangerous even for things everyone agrees on.
In this talk, recorded at D10E in San Francisco in July 2016, Andreas discusses the architecture of power, how decentralization compares to centralization and how each scales. Architecture determines how power is concentrated and has important implications for liberty.

Would countries reliant on remittances adopt cryptocurrencies? Price premiums providing an incentive for arbitrage in international transfers. To get money from the UK to India, Western Union will charge 5% in fees while Bitcoin will charge -20%. They can stop one person doing it, but they can't stop everyone or they're going to have to search a lot of luggage in the airports. If they start finding papr wallets, people will start memorising seeds and walk across the border with remittances. Mining factories and ant miner smuggling in Venezuela. Being involved with Bitcoin in Venezuela can put you in jail. If you live in the West - you think Bitcoin is hard, that it's too difficult to enter an 8-character password with symbols? Go talk to a Venezuelan about what they go through.
CLARIFICATION: At 2:26, I said that it was illegal to use bitcoin in to escape Venezuela's currency collapse. This is somewhat incorrect. There is still no law in Venezuela that is explicitly in favor or against the use of bitcoin itself; Bitcoin's status in Venezuela would be more accurately described as a grey market. Authorities have justified arrests based on accusations of "committing cyber fraud and power theft," or "money laundering" and "financing terrorism." Bitcoin miners are often subject to extortion by local police. Another charge has been "bypassing currency controls," which is what I meant to address in that statement.
This is part of a talk which took place on December 3rd 2016 at the Coinscrum {MiniCon}, hosted by Imperial College in London, England: https://www.meetup.com/coinscrum/events/235709468/

In this talk, Andreas recounts the history of Bitcoin and what it represents, building upon all the stories we've been told over the centuries about what "money" is, how we perceive its value, and why the old answers have changed as we adjust to this new world of digital peer-to-peer currencies. He also discusses global threats to economic stability and trust in the financial system, including demonetisation and wealth destruction through inflation.

A family member entrusts you to keep a backup copy of their cryptocurrency wallet seed. You gift them some bitcoin. Did you just give it to yourself? This is a great question that brings up some important points about gifting crypto to others. Watch this 2 min video to learn more.
This video is just one of the many questions aantonop answered in the Giving and Receiving Crypto as Gifts Livestream, which took place in November 2020. Watch the entire video here: https://aantonop.io/giftingcrypto. If you want to ask questions early (before the live event), become a Community Builder on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/aantonop Patrons get early access to ask questions, view the latest bitcoin, ethereum, cryptocurrency, and open blockchains talks, behind-the-scenes content, and much more.
Many people want to give bitcoin, ether, and other cryptocurrencies as gifts. But for those of us who have done this, we know that too often the recipient loses their keys and our cryptocurrency gift is gone forever. Of course, they only let us know they've "misplaced" the gift when the prices soar, which makes it even worse! So, for those of you who are trustworthy, consider setting up a wallet for them, using a mnemonic and then keeping a copy of the mnemonic so that you can "take back" the gift if they don't want it. As suggested in the original question, if you have a copy of the mnemonic, then you can effectively be a 'backup" for the recipient. In the USA, it's common to give people gifts with gift receipts tucked into the box, so that if the person doesn't really want the gift they're not stuck with it. Keeping a copy of the mnemonic is one way of creating a returnable gift of cryptocurrency!
