This visualization shows how the distribution of land temperature anomalies has varied over time. As the planet has warmed, we see the peak of the distribution shifting to the right. The distribution of temperatures broadens as well. This broadening is most likely due to differential regional warming rather than increased temperature variability at any given location.
These distributions are calculated from the Goddard Institute of Space Studies GISTEMP surface temperature analysis. Distributions are determined for each year using a kernal density esitmator, and we morph between those distributions in the animation.

GPM captured Hurricane Delta the evening of October 8 at approximately 7:40pm CST. This visualization shows the heavy rain structures within the heart of the Hurricane as it moved towards the Gulf coast.
Hurricane Delta is the 25th named Atlantic storm of the 2020 hurricane season. After exhausting a list of prepared names, the World Meteorological Organization turns to the Greek alphabet to name storms. Delta marked the strongest Greek-named storm on record. Hurricanes typically get a massive boost of energy when they pass over warm waters. Hurricane Delta rapidly intensified from a tropical depression to Category 4 storm in about 30 hours.

The NASA/USGS Landsat satellite mission is helping scientists study how the Amazon rainforest has changed over decades. The Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, but every year, less of that forest is still standing. Today's deforestation across the Amazon frontier is tractors and bulldozers clearing large swaths to make room for industrial-scale cattle ranching and crops. So far, the amount of area that's been deforested in the Brazilian Amazon alone is equivalent to the size of the state of California.
Scientists like Tasso Azevedo of MapBiomas and Doug Morton of NASA use satellite data to map land cover in Brazil with a historical perspective. Using the Landsat archive, they can precisely identify where the massive forest has been cleared and if it was permitted. The aim of MapBiomas is to enable better decisions for managing their natural resources.
The Landsat Program is a series of Earth-observing satellite missions jointly managed by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Landsat satellites have been consistently gathering data about our planet since 1972. They continue to improve and expand this unparalleled record of Earth's changing landscapes for the benefit of all.

Iota is now considered the strongest storm to hit Nicaragua in the country's history and has killed six people, according to the Nicaraguan government.
Four adults and two minors are dead, according to Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo.
More than 400,000 people in Nicaragua were affected by the storm as it made landfall near Haulover, Tuesday as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds near 155 mph, according to the NHC.
Over 62,000 people in the Central American nation have been moved into 683 government shelters following the storm, the country's government said on national television Tuesday.
There is almost no communication with the city of Bilwi, also known as Puerto Cabezas, due to blackouts and fallen electrical cables.
In Columbia, at least two people have died and one is missing, according to Colombian President Ivan Duque.
Iota was downgraded to a Category 4 storm as it made landfall and is currently moving west at 12 mph, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The center of the storm is expected to move over southern Honduras Tuesday, and continue weakening near El Salvador Wednesday.
