How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life (Russ Roberts)
Adam Smith's other book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, is often neglected. Author and economist Russ Roberts says it's an important and valuable guide to important parts of our lives. His new book is How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life: An Unexpected Guide to Human Nature and Happiness.
The world is doomed, many people argue, citing poverty, dwindling natural resources, and an allegedly unsustainable rate of population growth. They say there are just too many problems to overcome. But is that really the case?
In his book "Fewer, Richer, Greener: Prospects for Humanity in an Age of Abundance," Laurence Siegel shows that the world has improved―and will likely continue to improve―in almost every dimension imaginable. That includes access to more food, better health, greater longevity, and higher levels of education. He argues that we live in the safest and most prosperous time in all of human history.
Siegel makes a convincing case for showing gratitude for today’s world and optimism about the bountiful world of tomorrow. During this forum, moderated by HumanProgress.org's Chelsea Follett, Bryan Caplan will provide constructive and critical comments.

With the Senate poised to consider comprehensive "cybersecurity" legislation this month, a bevy of questions need answers. Although it is difficult to secure computers, networks, and data, are government spending and regulation the answer? Are the cybersecurity threats touted in Washington real or trumped up? Should legal protections for privacy and other values give way in the name of "information sharing" with the Department of Homeland Security?

http://www.cato.org/events/libertarianism-what-everyone-needs-know
Featuring the author Jason Brennan, Assistant Professor of Ethics, Economics, and Public Policy, Georgetown University; with comments by Aaron Ross Powell, Research Fellow, Cato Institute and Editor, Libertarianism.org; and Tom Merrill, Assistant Professor of Government, American University; moderated by John Samples, Director, Center for Representative Government, Cato Institute.
Historically, Americans have seen libertarians as far outside the mainstream, but as Jason Brennan points out, libertarianism is a quite different — and far richer — system of thought than most suspect. Brennan offers a nuanced portrait of libertarianism, proceeding through a series of questions to illuminate the essential elements of libertarianism and the problems the philosophy addresses, including such topics as the value of liberty, human nature and ethics, economic liberty, civil rights, social justice and the poor, government and democracy, and contemporary politics. As he sheds light on libertarian beliefs, Brennan overturns numerous misconceptions. Libertarianism is not about simple-minded paranoia about government, he writes. Rather, it celebrates the ideal of peaceful cooperation among free and equal people. Brennan argues that libertarians are, in fact, animated by benevolence and a deep concern for the poor.

The Association of American Medical Colleges projects a shortage of as many as 48,000 primary care physicians by 2034. Yet there are not enough residency positions for the number of medical school graduates. Missouri became the first state to address this problem by launching a new licensure category: assistant physician (AP). APs are essentially apprentice physicians. The reform lets graduates without a residency position provide primary care in clinics while enhancing their knowledge and skills. Six other states have passed similar laws: Arkansas, Kansas, Utah, Arizona, Louisiana, and Idaho.
Please join Kevin D. Dayaratna, PhD, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis; Keith J. Frederick, DO, a former Missouri legislator who spearheaded the country’s first AP law; and Lyman Wostrel, MD, a primary care physician practicing under Missouri’s AP law, to discuss this issue. Cato Institute senior fellow Jeffrey A. Singer, MD, will moderate the discussion.

http://www.cato.org/events/european-crisis-continues-no-solution-horizon
As the European Crisis continues, with no solution in sight, it is becoming increasingly clear to many that the problems are deep and structural. Stagnant growth, persistent unemployment, and public dissatisfaction are threatening the very premises of the European project. Although some believe that "an ever-closer Europe" is the solution, others argue that the current crisis is no accident; it is the natural result of naïve and excessively optimistic expectations concerning the economic benefits of integration and centralization. Professor Václav Klaus, former Czech minister of finance and prime minister, and now distinguished senior fellow at the Cato Institute, will address these pressing questions during his first visit to Washington just days after stepping down from his second term as president.
