The vulnerable world hypothesis is a theory that there is a level of technological progress that almost certainly guarantees the destruction of civilization. When scientists learned how to split the atom, many feared nuclear power would lead to the end of life on planet Earth. When the Large Hadron Collider began operating in 2008, thousands believed it would open a black hole, consuming the world and everything in it. Now, humans have the threat of artificial intelligence hanging over their heads. The fear is great enough that technology leaders all over the world are calling for a pause on AI, claiming it represents a huge risk to society. The question of the decade is whether it will save us or lead to our annihilation. However, only time will tell if AI is humanity's saving grace or a devil in disguise. That leaves the question of today: Is the plug about to be pulled on AI?
