Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have begun their ‘precision counterterrorism operation’ in Rafah, southern Gaza, as evidenced by the thick clouds of smoke now covering large parts of the city. IDF warplanes have begun targeting buildings in the administrative district in a bid to ‘eliminate Hamas terrorists.’ Israeli tanks had already gained a foothold on the outskirts of Rafah, near the border with Egypt; however, these fresh strikes have occurred deep within the city itself, part of Israel’s stated mission to ‘apply military pressure on Hamas,’ in order to secure better terms in the proposed ceasefire.
