"Once in Royal David's city," the melody rings out, painting a picture of a humble stable bathed in the glow of a winter night. This beloved Christmas carol, more than just a festive tune, transports us to the heart of the Nativity story, reminding us of the extraordinary miracle that unfolded within four simple walls.
Born Among the Lowly:
Our journey begins in 1843, amidst the bustling life of Victorian England. Hymnwriter Cecil Alexander, deeply moved by the plight of the poor living in her London parish, sought to create a carol that resonated with their experience. In doing so, she turned away from the opulent imagery of traditional Christmas carols and embraced the humble setting of the Nativity – a lowly cattle shed where a king was born.
A Child Like Any Other:
The lyrics of "Once in Royal David's City" capture the simple humanity of the Christmas story. Alexander portrays Jesus not as a divine being born in opulence, but as a vulnerable child like any other, nestled in a manger, watched over by a loving mother. This relatable image served as a powerful reminder that God's love extends to all, regardless of station or circumstance.
A Melody Through Time:
The haunting melody that accompanies Alexander's words was composed by Henry John Gauntlett, a music teacher from Bath. Inspired by the carol's message of humility and grace, Gauntlett crafted a simple yet evocative tune that perfectly captures the wonder and tenderness of the Nativity scene.
A Carol for All:
"Once in Royal David's City" quickly resonated with the hearts of the English people. Its relatable message of hope and its beautiful melody spread across the nation, eventually finding its way across the globe. Today, it remains one of the most beloved Christmas carols in the world, sung in homes, churches, and public spaces, uniting people of all faiths and backgrounds in a shared moment of reflection and joy.

In the Bleak Midwinter: A Hymn of Hope Amidst Winter's Chill ❄️✨
"In the bleak midwinter," the words hang in the air, heavy with the quiet of a snowy landscape. This evocative carol, more than just a Christmas melody, paints a stark picture of winter's harshness, yet finds hope and beauty blooming within its frozen embrace.
Born from a Bleak Landscape:
Written by the acclaimed Victorian poet Christina Rossetti in 1872, the poem originally titled "A Christmas Carol" wasn't published as a hymn until 1906. Rossetti, known for her contemplative and often melancholic verses, found inspiration in the stark beauty of a snowy English winter. Unlike conventional Nativity imagery, she embraced the season's desolation, using it as a backdrop for celebrating Christ's birth as a beacon of light in the midst of darkness.
Music from the Depths:
In 1906, composer Gustav Holst set Rossetti's poem to music, creating the enduring melody we know today. Holst's music, initially deemed "dreary" by some, perfectly captures the poem's contemplative mood. It moves in gentle, undulating waves, mirroring the slow descent and rise of falling snow, yet with a subtle undercurrent of hope that builds towards the final, triumphant verse.
A Beloved Hymn for the Coldest Days:
" In the Bleak Midwinter" has become a cherished carol for winter gatherings, especially in parts of the world where Christmas falls within the dark embrace of the coldest months. Its message of hope amidst hardship resonates deeply, reminding us that even in the bleakest moments, the promise of renewal and joy can bloom.

I like this patch library so much that I made a second track with it. The Cygnus Wall is a little more uplifting and driven along by the drum track, which is not part of this patch library.
The Cygnus Wall is a portion of the North American Nebula (NGC 7000) in the constellation Cygnus. The nebula is approximately 1,500 light-years from Earth, and the Cygnus Wall spans about 20 light-years. The Wall exhibits the most concentrated star formations in the nebula.

In this #cubase tutorial I demonstrate how to remove automation from a track. This is useful if you want to layer your sounds and keep the same performance, as in the notes actually played and the feel of the recorded part.
Some patches add a different #sound the more you push the #modulation, for example it may increase the reverb tail or add another feature like a bell sound. If you copy the midi part directly across you will also bring with it the automation that you have recorded. Now this automation could have a drastically different effect on the new sound, which just doesn't work with your track.
Although I show you how to delete all the automation, you can use this technique to remove just some of it, if that is what you are after.
If you found this tip useful, give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel. This channel is yours as much as it is mine. What would you like to see covered in upcoming videos? Do you want more music? more omnisphere tips and patch library reviews? or more cubase?
