Zenkutsu Dachi (Front Stance)The first shotokan karate stance used when practicing basics (kihon) while stepping forward and backwards is zenkutsu dachi (front stance). This is classed as a basic stance and most people can grasp the basic fundamentals of this stance very quickly, although there are many advanced concepts with this stance later on in your karate practice.Get into the habit of breaking new karate moves down, they then become much easier to understand the small detail.Zenkutsu Dachi (front stance)1. Weight distribution for front stance is 70% of your weight on your front leg and 30% on the back leg.2. Feet should be hip width to shoulder width apart and this width will decrease as you advance in your karate.3. Stance length depends on the length of your legs, but one shoulder width and a half is a good guide to start.4. Feet should be both facing forward as much as possible.5. There are two hip positions when first practicing front stance, they are square and side on.6. Roll the hips up and try not to let your hips stick out.7. Keep your back straight8. Try not to lock the back leg straight. Your back knee should be very slightly bent.9. Your front knee should be heavily bent and you should not be able to see the toes of your front foot.10. Try not to let the front knee fall inwards, keep it facing forward.11. If you drop a line down from your front knee it should come down just above the ball of the foot.Zenkutsu dachi should be practiced consistently, the stance should always be the same length and getting a good front stance is imperative for your future progression in karate. Whether you are attending a karate dojo, or learning karate at home, I recommend you break all techniques down and repeat again and again. For stances it's a good idea to hold the position for a minute or two and then change to a different stance and repeat.

This is a requirement when testing from 4th kyu purple and white belt to 3rd kyu brown belt.
We have two combinations, the other being, mae geri, yoko geri kekomi, gyaku zuki, gedan barai. both of these combinations work on the same fundamentals, which are, keeping the hikite and blocking arm in position whilst two kicks are executed, shomen (square facing) hanmi (side facing) and making the combination continuous.
1. Start from a hidari gedan barai ( left side downward block)
2. Whilst keeping the arms in the same position, kick mae geri (front kick) with the right leg.
3. Drive off the left leg and take a step forward (you can vary the distance of the step), then whilst keeping the arms in the gedan barai position, kick mawashi geri (round kick) with the left leg.
4. Recover the kicking leg then drive off the right leg and land gyaku zuki (reverse punch) with the right arm.
5. Then turn and repeat on the opposite side.

This is excellent drill for working on balance between commitment and control and getting good at it proves that one does not exclude the other. The basic question it asks is if you are able to adapt during those 0.2 second needed for executing the punch. If the answer is yes - you won’t need to pause and restart in instances where the opponent slides back after you started moving.

shotokan karate kihon training
4 Block Punch Combinations Stepping
In this shotokan karate kihon training exercise we are working on four basic blocks, each one followed with a reverse punch (gyaku zuki).
Although these techniques are classed as basic Shotokan Karate training, they are confusing, as after each gyaku zuki, the same arm then performs the next block, so there is a lot of arm switching involved.
In this kihon exercise, we are working on lots of Shotokan Karate fundamentals. They are ~
Shomen and Hanmi
Zenkutsu Dachi
Gyaku Zuki
4 Basic blocks
Leg driving, forwards and backwards.
Keeping the same height throughout the techniques.
Timing
Breathing
Kime
The shotokan karate kihon training combinations we are practicing are ~
1. Age Uke (upper block) Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch).
2. Soto Uke (outside block) Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch).
3. Uchi Uke (inside block) Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch).
4. Gedan Barai (downward block) Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch).

https://www.shotokankarateonline.com/blog/shotokan-karate-stances-kiba-dachi-horse-riding-stance/
Kiba Dachi (Horse Riding Stance) kiba dachi is also referred to as straddle stance.
Shotokan karate stance kiba dachi is first used when practicing yoko geri kekomi (side thrust kick) and yoko geri keage (side snap kick). Kiba dachi is also used extensively throughout the Shotokan kata.
This is classed as a basic stance and most people can grasp the basic fundamentals of this stance very quickly, although there are many advanced concepts with this stance later on in your karate practice.
Get into the habit of breaking new karate moves down, they then become much easier to understand the small detail.
Kiba Dachi (horse riding stance)
1. Weight distribution for kiba dachi is weight central.
2. Stance length depends on the length of your legs, but one shoulder width and a half is a good guide to start.
3. Feet should be both facing forward as much as possible.
4. Bend the knees naturally, do not push the knees out or let them collapse inwards.
5. Roll the hips up and try not to let your hips stick out.
6. Keep your back straight
7. Tighten the inside of the thighs.
8. If you drop a line down from either knee it should come down inside the big toe.
Kiba dachi should be practiced consistently, the stance should always be the same length and getting a good front stance is imperative for your future progression in karate. Whether you are attending a karate dojo, or learning karate at home, I recommend you break all techniques down and repeat again and again. For stances it’s a good idea to hold the position for a minute or two and then change to a different stance and repeat.

https://www.shotokankarateonline.com/blog/heian-yondan-kata-moves-1-and-2/
The first two moves of Heian Yondan are all about attitude!
There are many applications for the first two moves in Heian Yondan, but in the kata, they are performed slowly, using zanshin (total awareness) and kamae (mind and body ready).
The feeling should be strong, like you are ready to fight, focus, deep breathing in and out, try not to speed up at the end of each technique, instead keep the moves constant am]nd smooth, no shuddering, jerky movements.
Each of the first two moves should take approximately 3 to 4 seconds.
Keep a good kokutsu dachi (back stance) and try and keep the wrists straight. Each arm is bent at a ninety degree angle, wrist near the forehead on one arm, with the elbow directly out from the shoulder on the other arm. Arms should make a box shape as in Heian Nidan.

Shotokan Karate Classes Online
In this quick 15 minute shotokan karate follow along class, Sensei Huckle works on the karate flow, using three punches.
Along with the three punches we add a shuffle, tsugi ashi (back foot steps up, then front foot steps forward).
Starting from a left leg in front fighting stance, the full combination is ~
1. Gyaku zuki (reverse punch) on the spot with the right arm.
2. Back leg steps up to the front leg. As the back leg meets the front leg, punch kizami zuki (lead arm punch) with the left arm.
3. Step forward with the front leg, land and punch gyaku zuki (reverse punch) with the right arm.

The Karate Flow
The karate flow is a very important part of Shotokan karate practice.
Trying not to be robotic is very difficult because we are also trying to use kime on every technique.
Many shotokan practisioners are robotic in their movement and most of the time, it is down to holding to much tension in the muscles.
Kime in basic terms is relax-tense-relax and while this is good training, kime is way more than just muscle tension.
Try a relax the muscles as you move, only tensing for a split second on completion of the technique, then completely relax, but keep kamae.
Many karateka either move very robotic, or they flow with no power in their techniques.
Watching someone like Mikio Yahara Sensei is how i believe it should be, Yahara Sensei flows and has incredible focus on every technique, very few karateka reach this level.
Watching Yahara Sensei perform a kata to me, is like poetry in motion, with the added ingredient of deadly karate techniques.
