As a professional health coach, Dr. Shapiro is in a unique position to clarify issues related to diet and the well-being of the body, especially with regards to women’s health and breast cancer. “Soy, whole soy foods, we're talking about tempeh, tofu, this is organic, edamame, soy milk. Whole soy foods are extremely helpful and will reduce your risk of breast cancer.”
According to the American Cancer Society, in the United States alone, it is estimated that 281,000 invasive breast cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2021, and 43,600 women will die from this disease. “So, we're talking about a diet that's centered around whole plant foods. They will not increase your risk of breast cancer. They will also decrease the risk of prostate cancer in men. Now initially, when studies were being done on soy and especially on the soy phytoestrogen, they found that soy has something in it called isoflavones.”
“So, eating more soy, especially early in life… if you can start your baby off on breast milk and then move to soy milk, you can see almost a 50% or almost 60% decrease in breast cancer later in life.” Whole soy products containing high concentrations of isoflavones can help create the further beneficial effect of producing equol in the digestive system of the human body. Not everyone has the bacteria required to transform isoflavones into equol, but a study found vegetarians are 4-times more likely to be able to produce equol compared to non-vegetarians.
Dr. Shapiro takes us to explore the benefits of soy from a genetic perspective. “Well, soy isoflavones upregulate the gene for DNA repair. So even if you carry that BRCA mutation, if you eat more soy, you're going to get more DNA repair, genetically speaking.”

Seneca, also known as Seneca the Younger, was a prominent Roman philosopher, orator, statesman, and a tragedian author. He was considered Rome’s leading intellectual figure during the mid-1st century. Although born in Spain, Seneca spent most of his life in Rome, where he received his education in philosophy and rhetoric. Let us now read an excerpt from the book “Seneca’s Morals: Of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency,” in Chapter 1 of the section “Seneca of a Happy Life.”
“There is not anything in this world, perhaps, that is more talked of, and less understood, than the business of a happy life. It is every man’s wish and design; and yet not one of a thousand that knows wherein that happiness consists. We live, however, in a blind and eager pursuit of it; and the more haste we make in a wrong way, the further we are from our journey’s end.”
“The true felicity of life is to be free from perturbations, to understand our duties towards God and man: to enjoy the present without any anxious dependence upon the future. 光耀世界愛心獎得主：黎文哈先生—心地善良無私奉獻的醫師
Today, we journey to Cần Thơ, a city in southern Âu Lạc (Vietnam), to meet a great Oriental Medicine Doctor, Lê Văn Hả, who devotedly takes care of vulnerable seniors and those with no relatives at his facility, free of charge. He also gives them a comfortable shelter unconditionally and runs a completely free vegan eatery nearby his house.
“I saw that most of the people here are destitute, who live by the riverside. Then I suggested to the Township Governmental Board to allow me to open a vegan kitchen. I wanted to help feed the poor people so they feel less suffering, less spending for food, so that they can labor without too much worries. Therefore, I wanted to operate the vegan kitchen here.”
“Most of the people who come here to receive the vegan meals are meat eaters. So, when they are eating vegan food, we have the reason to do it. Any day that they don’t eat meat, they reduce their bad karma. And the people who work here will gain merits. And when we do the charitable work, we also reduce our bad karma. Therefore, that’s why I operate a vegan kitchen in this lifetime. Even though I work hard and strenuously, with no money, I still do it. If having no money, I can borrow from other people, and then I work multiple jobs to repay them.”
“I went to work different kind of jobs so that I could earn money to be able to do charitable works and give medicine to others at no cost. Everywhere I went, I encouraged people to be vegan. And because of being a nurse, it is easier for me to advise people to be vegan. As a Buddhist myself, I always try to have compassion, and spread the Dharma.”
Deeply touched by his compassionate deeds, Supreme Master Ching Hai, “with grateful tears” presented the affectionate physician the Shining World Compassion Award, “plus US$50,000 to lovingly support his noble work, in Heaven’s mercy. May the Buddhas embrace your soul and those you care for with powerful spiritual upliftment and love.”
Our Association members in Âu Lạc (Vietnam) happily held a ceremony and presented Dr. Lê Văn Hả with the Award. Besides the Award letter, he also received a beautiful crystalline plaque, Master’s monetary contribution, as well as several of Master’s publications.

In addition to his renowned epic novels, Leo Tolstoy wrote essays and letters that conveyed the spiritual truths he came to realize in life. Along with adopting and promoting the vegetarian diet, he became deeply interested in spirituality and living by the ethical teachings of Christ.
Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke about the uplifting nature of Leo Tolstoy’s work during a group meditation session with our Association members in July 1997, in Los Angeles, USA. “Because Tolstoy was a practitioner. That's why when you read his stories, most stories are about spiritual things, about God, and very happy and very positive. It's very good to read him, to read his books. You try. If you haven't, you try. You can read more. Such thing is very good for you.”
We would like to share with you an insightful excerpt from Volume 2 of “The Pathway of Life,” called “Living in the Present.”
“People imagine that the course of their life is in time – in the past or in the future. But this is a delusion: the true life of men is not in time, but always is in that timeless spot where the past and the future meet and which we inexactly call the present time. In this timeless point of the present, and therein alone, man is free, and therefore the true life of man is in the present, and in the present alone.”
