However, it also presents a few contradictions, like the bakelite chassis and back cover that is in really good shape. Time to even out the condition with a full restoration. It is an AM only set, with Long wave, Medium wave and two Shortwave channels. This was very typical in Madeira, where FM took a little longer that usual to arrive. The economics of the era also contributed to many FM-less sets on the island. The apparent shortcomings in no way detract from the emotional attachment that some people have to their old radios, so this one deserves as much resect and attention as any other set, no matter how advanced. The linearly variable voltage implemented in the design also serves as a means of reforming old electrolytic capacitors. I could have bought an old one and restored it, but this seemed like a better idea - designing and building a more accurate and modern one, as well as making the applied voltage linearly variable so that I can get a true reading of the leakage as the operating voltage rises. Obviously, another requirement was safety. High voltage zaps you, and I like living. This video is the second of the design stages of the circuit. In one case I was able to do a semi-repair, and in the other I actually produced a replacement as the entire surface was clear and visible. This one is different. The entire dial glass is shatterred, so reproducing it is going to be challenging. Never mind. It's always an opportunity to learn something new. I also want to do this series with far more detail than usual, to help people who are still learning the basics, as others helped me when I first embarked on this adventure.
