BuildTak™ FlexPlate System, Part 1 - Unboxing
Unboxing the BuildTak™ FlexPlate System for a Type A Machines Series 1 Pro 3D printer.

Comment from BuildTak:

"We certainly tested many prototypes to determine the optimal magnet quantity and layout - the magnets were carefully arranged to provide enough attractive force across the whole surface of the FlexPlate, especially while heated (when the FlexPlate naturally wants to bend) - but there was no deliberate arrangement of polarities, as suggested in Part 4. We also have to admit that the circuit pattern on the bottom of the magnetic base is a purely decorative pattern which does not impact functionality at all!"

This system uses a powerful magnetic base that is adhered to the glass surface of the Series 1 printer which holds a spring steel plate in place. On top of that flexible plate can be applied any number of build surfaces. In this case, the plate is supplied with a sheet of white BuildTak material.

A number of advantages of this system that I can see.

First is it makes it easy to remove the build surface for easier removal of the printed parts. By flexing the plate up and down, the bond of the part to the surface is weakened and makes removing the print easier and with less wear and tear on the BuildTak.

Second is it provides an easy and economical path to having multiple build surfaces. 12" square spring steel sheets cost $35 and could be set up with any number of surface materials like PEI, Kapton, or Garolite to name a few. To do this with a non-heated build plate would cost $79 and with a new heated plate, $495. And those options require time consuming removal of the entire build plate and re-leveling the new one after installation.

Thirdly, it's a great way to eliminate damage to the glass build surface on the printer. Mine had a few chips in it from tough to remove prints where I must have had a gap in Glue Stick coverage that allowed the hot plastic to bond to the glass. Instead of shelling out $495 for a new heated bed, $149 and I can keep using the slightly damaged one.
