Pittsburgh Shop Stool Assembly and First Impressions
I picked up a Pittsburgh Automotive Adjustable Shop Stool With Backrest from Harbor Freight the other day.
Really wanted to have a stool in my shop that had a back rest and would allow me to relax while taking a break from any project that might be happening in the Cave. This was at a price point comparable to the other big box hardware and supply stores. So I figure the quality is probably about the same as well since pretty much all of these stools come from the same part of the world. And Harbor Freight is a lot less stingy with their coupons. I checked out the offerings and I didn't feel that any particular brand was superior, so I visited Pittsburgh.
The assembly was easy and straightforward. You need a box/crescent wrench, Philips screwdriver, and a hex key. Loosely put the base together so there is enough play in the base to insert the next bolts in the series. Once all the nuts and bolts are attached, tighten them down.
Next, drop the hydraulic piston into place and put the seat on top. Attach, the brackets for the backrest and then snap the backrest into place.
It is as easy as that and now I have a place to park my rear end.

I found an old, beat up block plane at a flea market. The blade was in rough shape. Paid a buck for it. Today, I am going to sharpen the blade and see if it will take some shavings. The main goal is to make it good enough to knock the edge off any corners of a project.
I'm using a Veritas Mk II Honing Guide. Some guys can go freehand when they sharpen and get amazing results. I am not one of them. There is no shame in using a jig, especially for edges that require any sort of precision! Like chisels and planes! And for ease of use, I recommend this one. For a pocket knife or a chef's knife, a coffee mug works just fine for me. (At the time this video was made, I do not have any relationship, except as a casual user of the product, with the makers of the Veritas Guide.
Additionally, I am using sandpaper in 100, 220, 600, and 1500 grits. The two finer grits are wet/dry papers so I used a little glass cleaner to help clear away waste from the sharpening.
The surface is a piece of kitchen granite from a renovation. It was the perfect size to make a good sharpening station.
The results were just ok. I was able to take a large shaving on the edge and chamfer a corner.

Found a small puddle of coolant under my F150. Turns out there is a small leak from an unexpected place. The T pipe that comes from the engine and leads back to the radiator contains an O ring on the inside of one of the radiator hoses that is susceptible to leaking after a few years.
This leak appears to be fairly common in 5.0 V8 engines from 2011 to 2018.
You can replace the whole T connector or you might get away with simply changing the O rings inside the radiator hose. In this video, I change the upper radiator hose O ring. It was a pretty simple fix and it broadened my wrenching skills.

Our backyard is very open and sunny. It can get very hot on summer days. So my wife came home with a sun shade and we only have one tree to anchor it from. So I had to create a solution using 3/4 inch pvc pipe, caps, and some full length thread hex bolts. The pvc pipes were cut to 8 foot lengths. This was a fun, easy project that can be done with minimal tools. Really just a hand saw and drill. You can do it! And keep reading to avoid two of my mistakes.
FAIL! This idea was awesome until I discovered the pvc was too flexible.
SUCCESS! I inserted two 4' lengths of 3/4" dowel (the second one trimmed slightly) into the pipe and gained the needed rigidity.
HINT! Bring a hand saw with you to wherever you are buying the pvc. I wanted to make two more posts, but I had to stop along the way home and didn't want to leave them sticking out of the back of my truck. Had to bend them. Well, after being forced into a bent position on a hot day, they stay bent. Cut them to length before you leave them in a hot vehicle.
HINT 2! Be sure to pull anchor lines out at a 45 degree angle away from the shade. That way the shade gets support in two directions. You will be surprised at how solid it stands!

If you have a great floor jack and a vehicle with pinch welds, you have faced frustration. Without an adapter, you probably can't safely lift your vehicle if it has pinch welds.
I recently purchased the Viveway Jack Pad Pinch Weld Frame Rail Adapter with Magnetic Function for Sub-Frame Vehicle Floor Jack from Amazon. This is a really long name that describes exactly what the product is. Pinch Weld Jack Adapter would have worked as well. It worked like a champ on my wife's 2019 Nissan Rogue. Fit right over the pinch welds and had no problems lifting the vehicle. It felt safe and lifting it with my three ton floor jack felt a lot better than trying to use the Rogue's scissor jack. It was also a lot faster than a scissor jack.
The adapter held up well. It wound up with a small chip or two in the powder coat. That was expected. The lift process is metal on metal and it is an SUV being lifted. Otherwise, there was no damage or deformation to the adapter. Many of the other adapters a read about on Amazon mention damage to the adapter or having to modify it to fit their jack.
I fully expect this pinch weld adapter to provide years of service. I'm a home gamer when it comes to vehicles. This adapter will not be used like it would be in a busy shop.

A little fun right outside the Project Cave completing an oil change on my F150. I DIY because the last time I took it to an oil change place, whoever put the filter not only used a wrench (they are supposed to be hand tightened), but he used the wrong size wrench. This crimped the end and put a couple of tiny holes in it. I have been enjoying changing it myself and haven't been back to one of those places since.
Before someone says that road debris could have caused it, that is highly doubtful. The oil filter location is shielded by part of the frame.
Any way, I like doing it myself again. I get a full synthetic change and air filters for less than half of what those places charge.

A viewer request for a Garden Hose Hanger! Not your big box hanger! The hose hanger uses a couple of circles and some dowels to spread the circles apart. I also cut a hole and used some dowels to make a shelf where you could put the hose nozzle or a wrench or other small tool you use in the garden.
I also made a huge mistake while building. My original hose hanger was destroyed during assembly. I was a little too enthusiastic with a mallet while putting it together. There for all to witness and hopefully learn from. The dowels need to be inserted one at a time. Hammering the circle on to all the dowels is not the way to go. Unless you like building things multiple times.
I used dowels as the spacers to allow water to drain from the hanger. No standing water on an wooden item means a longer lasting project. Also used Titebond 3 waterproof glue.
Remember to paint it with multiple coats of exterior paint. The paint will help it last longer. And the large surface is a blank canvas! Unleash your creativity! It could be painted like a sunflower! Like a race car wheel! Like anything your imagination could come up with! I'm entertaining the notion of a shark face!
This project should go out by your hose bib. It'll be a great place to store your garden hose.

I have an industrial shelf unit in the Project Cave. It looks ugly with stuff piled on all the shelves. There is no other good way to store the items on the shelves, so I needed a way to dress it up. DIY sliding doors will do the trick.
The rails are made out of 2"x3" lumber. Two 1/4" groves were routed the entire length of one 2" side. This operation can be easily done with a table saw as well. Use caution either way. The doors are made out of 2'x3' panels cut to fit the rails. The panels are reversible whiteboard/blackboard combos. The versatility is nice. A solid black background is nice and clean looking while the whiteboard side is nice for notes, cut lists, to do lists, and any other information your project may require. Maybe even a snarky comment at some point.
The homemade sliding doors are a nice simple way to make the Cave look a lot cleaner and more professional. And you are not limited to the combo panels I used. I originally was going to use painted 1/4" plywood.
