The Other Future Podcast #7: Vale-Search and Destroy and More
In this episode of The Other Future, Terry Tapp talks with the cultural icon V. Vale. Vale began the influential punk magazine, Search and Destroy, and through his publication imprint, Re/Search Pubs, he brought William Burroughs and JG Ballard to the American public, essentially created industrial music and culture, gave voice to the modern tattoo renaissance, and continues to work and push the creative envelope today.
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.
The question “What would happen if every worker in America won a million dollars?” sets up a rather absurd thought experiment, but it’s one that gets to the heart of what Marx and Engels really meant when they claimed that the material basis of society determined, in the last analysis, what happens in society.

Joanna Demers’ essay “The Necks and Marx's Economy of Time” asks what kind of music helps us to imagine a break with capitalist logic. Her answer is simple: Minimalism.
Demers’ is chair of Musicology at the USC Thornton School of Music and the author of the books Drone and Apocalypse and Anatomy of Thought Fiction. In this video essay, she explores Marxism’s commitment to the future, the teleology at work in our linear orientation, and the promise of timelessness.

"Cromwell excels in unpicking the multiple deceits driving Western foreign policies, the ideological veil that keep us from ever seriously questioning the 'benign intentions' of 'our' leaders' or a media which regards itself as an associate 'good guy'." - John Hilley, Zen Politics
