Not every day is filled with big projects, in fact most days consist of several little projects and today a cool november day on the farm was no exception! After normal chores, the first job was to prep the garden area for planting our music garlic. Its getting late but there is still time and this weekend the weather is supposed to be warmer so should make for a good day to get it done! Next on the list was moving the horses electric fence to give them a bit bigger pasture area for the remainder of 2020. This is only temporary but still useful to help reduce the feed bill as there is plenty of grass still out in this area. Then we came inside and cleaned out one of the wood stove chimneys so we could start the stove as tonight is the coldest night so far this fall.
Anyways just a little bit of the "going's on" around the farm today on this cool November day! Thanks for watching! Steph and Chris ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wNRjyUyHsY

Recycled or reclaimed Sheep Barn Build - Part 1 we are building again! This time we needed somewhere to put some of our Icelandic sheep to get them separated into breeding groups. So the solution was to use recycled material around the yard to build the sheep barn.
So the other night we did some brainstorming to see how we could get this done both quickly and cost effectively. And this was our solution, a small 8x12 foot structure built out of several reclaimed/recycled materials that either came with the property or that we had been saving from other projects.
This build will use a bit of new material but the bulk of the build has been reclaimed/recycled materials. So far by the end of the first day (and this video) we have spent about three (3) hours on the build so not to bad! Anyways stay tuned for part 2 to see how we do with this!

To enter: Send us an email with your address to participate.
The email address is hickorycroftfarm@gmail.com
That’s it it's that easy!
You do not need an entry video but you are encouraged for those who create YouTube content. Share with us what you grow and what you are offering or potentially what you would like to try. Just be sure that the title includes Canadian Seed Challenge 2021 and that your description has #canadianseedchallenge as this will help us find you to add to the playlist.
Each email should contain:
1) Your address, and
2) If you are (choose the most applicable):
a)Someone who has never gardened or saved seeds
b) Someone who has gardened but not saved seeds
c) Someone who has gardened and saved seeds
You have until January 24 to get us your details to take part.
The challenge and seed swap:
1) Each participant will have five (5) random participants chosen to swap seeds with.
2) We are looking for each participant to share a minimum of three (3) seed varieties with each of their chosen swap partners
3) Participants do not have to be YouTube creators as we want this to be open to everyone but we do encourage content creators.
4) We are hoping for at least two updates from each participant over the 2021 gardening season.
o One update on how the plants are doing and one on the harvest (if applicable).
o We encourage each participant to share videos of their plants progress and any harvest
they get and we will be creating a playlist of all such videos (and we love watching
gardening content!).
o We also ask that people include the name of the variety and some growing instructions
as well
o Looking for heritage, heirloom or open pollinated plants as this encourages people to
keep the varieties going.
5) It is encouraged that seeds be saved from previous gardening seasons however this is not a requirement as we want to encourage as many people to participate as possible whether they have gardened before or not.
6) This is primarily a food oriented seed challenge so seeds from any edible plant can be included in the swap. This includes:
o Annual and bi-annual fruits and veggies
o Herbs
o Perennial plants (including trees and shrubs) and
o Companion plants
We will be holding weekly lives alternating bi-weekly between Lorries World and Hickorycroft Farm as the hosts. The purpose of these lives will be to:
o Talk about seeds and seed saving
o Share gardening tips
o Meet Canadian growers and promote a community of gardeners who are interested in
producing some of their own food and ma

Backyard Greenhouse Build Part 6 | The Old Window Greenhouse Is Finished
Growing spaces are important now more than ever. And we finally have one of our growing spaces finished! Its been some time but we have completed the old window greenhouse and now can use it for at least three season growing (will be a good season extender!). A backyard greenhouse is something anyone who has the space should consider and this is just one way to build one but has worked well for us using mostly recycled materials!

Chicken feed is a bit of a hot topic today as feed prices rise and many homesteaders are looking for ways to be more sustainable and therefore less depended on off farm resources when feeding their chickens. Cooking food for your chickens is a very good way to convert what may otherwise be a waste item into a homemade feed alternative for your chickens. Now this does not come without a cost as you will need some time to make this work but if chickens are providing your family with a sustainable source of food then the cost is likely going to be well worth the time and effort. Now in addition to using waste items we are starting to look beyond just scraps to ways to grow more feed for our chickens at home and today we are going to discuss some of our preliminary findings as it relates to cooking chicken feed at home to help in reducing the feeding cost of your chickens and provide them with a healthy diet they are actually going to eat.
Thanks so much for watching!

Its July but winter is coming if you live in the northern hemisphere. And in a way this is a calm before the storm. And after a day of a heavy rainstorm is it is good time to contemplate the coming winter and other hardships that are coming soon. Anyways this is a rambling thought but hopfully its at least interesting in looking at live in areas with winter and the deeper calm before the storm in the coming impending doom.
Thanks so much for watching!
