Off Grid Solar Boat 7 Knots 2018 06 26 18 54 00 08 8
Pitt Lake trip. From the marina to Pitt Lake all on batteries and solar. Arrived with enough power to cook supper. Set the spot lock and start the generator - good night. Short trip.
Yeah in this video we finally put the hammer down on the throttles and well not funny we end up going over 7 knots in speed. Not how you want to be running a solar catamaran. Nice to know but really a waste of energy.

I guess I am choked up some because nobody is even remotely interested in coming out for an electric boat trip. Surprising no - not at all. Everyone is always so busy doing there thing.
We try to remember where a little beach was. We were at it the year before but in the waning sunlight it becomes hard to find again.

Jim waves at the camera. We discuss the trip. We were actually fighting the outflow of the Fraser all the way up. The river is like glass now. It is times like this that make solar boating priceless. We have tons of power and we hammered the throttle today. We are arriving right on schedule.
Pitt Lake almost there. From the marina to Pitt Lake all on batteries and solar. Arrived with enough power to cooks supper. Set the spot lock and start the generator - good night. Short trip.
Jim adjusts the camera and we get on to some full screen scenery. The intent is really to show the capability of 20 kwh of stored energy for everyday use. This trip likely 65 km all on battery and solar power.

Here we are spot locked and squish a spider inside the cabin. I thought I smelled something plastic. Likely from the 1800 watt electric barbecue getting hot. Yeah plenty of power to even run the electric barbecue at the end of the trip. The generator comes on before bedtime and dumps the days power back into the lithium batteries for the most part.

Here we start to pick up speed and the trip starts getting faster as we are now at slack tide and entering the Pitt River almost.

Starting up the Fraser here. Lots of Debris in the water. Pretty sure we just passed or are passing our friend Graham who built the Catamaran Jazz. Actually he has way more of the bigger type of battery cells 700amp hour Winston Cells and an obscene amount of them like close to 80 kw/h worth. He insists on a sail and well so far as I am concerned each to their own. I know what works and works well and demonstrate that here. Graham damaged his mast or something when he got caught up in some kind of washing machine currents out around Victoria. Feels bad for the guy. Still though an awesome boat - overly complex yes but again each to their own.

Here we are ripping on the throttle. Over seven knots. Drives me crazy to watch this with the throttles not being equal. So much for the warp speed engineer. The bottom displays on the top from the left are port engine power and right engine power and the solar input in that order. We are outrunning a large barge coming up river MV Sea Imp IX.

Here we are going under the railway bridge. Always an interesting part of the trip going up the Fraser River.
