Fighting began in earnest on the morning of September 19. Bragg's men strongly assaulted but could not break the Union line. The next day, Bragg resumed his assault. In late morning, Rosecrans was misinformed that he had a gap in his line. In moving units to shore up the supposed gap, Rosecrans accidentally created an actual gap, directly in the path of an eight-brigade assault on a narrow front by Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet. Longstreet's attack drove one-third of the Union army, including Rosecrans himself, from the field. Union units spontaneously rallied to create a defensive line on Horseshoe Ridge, forming a new right wing for the line of Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, who assumed overall command of remaining forces. Although the Confederates launched costly and determined assaults, Thomas and his men held until twilight. Union forces then retired to Chattanooga while the Confederates occupied the surrounding heights, besieging the city.
On September 21, Rosecrans's army withdrew to the city of Chattanooga and took advantage of previous Confederate works to erect strong defensive positions. On July 18, Tyler advanced to Centreville and found that Centreville was unoccupied by Confederate troops. He then marched southeast to Mitchell's Ford and Blackburn's Ford, arriving at the latter about 11 a.m. Looking south across the stream, Tyler believed that the road to Manassas Junction was clear, but he failed to see the Confederate brigade of Brig. Gen. James Longstreet concealed in the woods behind the ford. He ordered two howitzers under Capt. Romeyn B. Ayres to bombard the Confederates he could see, guns of the Alexandria Artillery and the Washington Artillery, but the fire had no visible effect. He ordered Col. Israel B. Richardson and part of his brigade forward.
Richardson's advance met initial resistance from the 1st, 11th, and 17th Virginia Infantry regiments of Longstreet's brigade. Tyler ordered Ayres to move his guns closer to the action, accompanied by cavalry, and he sent the rest of Richardson's brigade toward the ford. Richardson's assault fell apart as the 12th New York Infantry began to retreat under heavy fire, causing a wave of panic to spread through the Union line.
Col. Jubal A. Early arrived with his Confederate brigade after marching 2 miles north from Beauregard's headquarters at Wilmer McLean's house. The availability of this additional firepower completed the Confederate victory, and a reinforced Washington Artillery kept the Union troops under fire as they retreated. Colonel Patrick T. Moore of the 1st Virginia Infantry, later a Confederate brigadier general, received a severe head wound in the skirmish and was incapacitated for further field service. kidtrjkpdtkptgftgf9349054890

Monaco was originally a Greek colony under the name of Monoikos. The name comes from the veneration of the demigod Hercules. They said that Hercules constructed the ancient passage between Spain and Italy. Roman Emperor Julian the Apposite does make mention of the construction of the road and development of a city at Monaco. Shrines dotted the entire length of the road and on the rock of Monaco itself a temple was said to have been constructed in honor of Hercules. After the Gallic wars which saw the entirety of Gaul coming under Roman scrutiny was the last time that any temples to Hercules were mentioned. No archaeological evidence has been done but due to the rocky terrain of Monaco any further excavations are unlikely.
In 1922, Louis II became the Prince of Monaco. While he was known to be strongly pro-French and had seen military service with Philippe Pétain, Louis II kept Monaco out of the war largely because the majority of the population of his principality was of Italian descent and was pro-Italy. In Nov 1942, Italian troops invaded the small neutral country and set up a puppet administration. When Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, German troops entered Monaco's borders. Monaco was home to about 300 Jews prior to the German occupation, and it was hosting a unknown number of Jewish refugees; some of them were deported to concentration camps. The government did its best to keep trade open between Britain, Germany and itself. The Germans were far more cooperative as the exports to Germany were very important as overseas trade was rather limited, even more so once Italy joined the war. The British were more skeptical, and while the Danish food imports were rather heavy, they were worried about the re-selling of British goods to Germany.
The army was mobilized August the first, and reached it's peak of 58,000 men by the end of the year. This force was extremely costly to maintain and only worsened supply issues, especially in Copenhagen, where the majority were stationed this was further compounded by a gradual migration from the country-side to cities as the war went on, with over 30,000 people moving to the city. Although trade had largely stayed the same during the war years, their was a massive problem with inflated prices, Prices rose immensely and the government introduced subsidiary programs and social relief programs to combat housing and food costs for the regular population. This was actually met with pretty good success and was funded by a new wave of taxes. The new taxes were clearly progressive and served to counter, at least to some degree, the very strong trend of growing gaps between the rich and poor in Denmark. kidtrjkpdtkptgftgf9349054890
