Editors - Klub Stodola 23rd November 2009
With the principles of honesty at the fore, I have to say the sound here is a little bit fuzzy around the edges in places. I'm guessing it's due to the effect of the increased volume on the recording equipment used, but this show is still a fine representation of Editors' third album campaign. The distortion is really at its most noticeable when the crowd are at their craziest (Munich, Racing Rats, Papillon etc). It's not soundboard, but pretty damn great in most of the places where it needs to be.
A consistency in the history of Editors in that they pushed themselves to take novel paths rather than the established courses, and their third record was at that time their biggest statement to that effect. All the elements that made listening to In This Light and on This Evening such a great experience are right here when they played Klub Stodola in Warsaw, Poland. Quite an accomplishment, given that this was the tour where the band had to adjust to playing different instruments on stage. Both the Back Room and An End Has a Start tours had predominantly seen them beginning as a straight up guitar band with a very occasional keyboard interlude (Camera), with the introduction of a full sized piano later on for songs like Racing Rats and Smokers. Here, there were banks of keyboards and other tech-toys which required learning and rehearsing, and then presenting these newly acquired skills to a paying crowd. Let's also not forget that ITLAOTE was where Tom began to really stretch his vocal capabilities. Sure, he'd already done that with songs like the aforementioned Camera, but that was all about the working out that lower range. This was all about the falsetto. Progress coupled with more than a dash of bravery, just to keep it all interesting.
As with most Editors shows there are little touches here and there which really enhance the experience. The vocal bleeds as Tom sings the chorus of Like Treasure for example, or that drum and bass break down during Munich, and the hymn-like intro to You Are Fading. As well as all the finesse and fineries, this is a chance to hear the entire In This Light and on This Evening album being played live. Enjoy the music ;)

Two 5 minute video interviews joined into one for you now, from Spanish music site Fly Music TV. We find the band in fine form in video 1, filmed backstage at the Summercase Festival in 2007. Interestingly, a recurring theme throughout both clips is of the band wanting to try something different when they recorded An End Has A Start. New instruments, new sounds but same Editors. This was, of course, particularly relevant to the situation they found themselves in two years later when In This Light And On This Evening came out and people got knocked sideways by the electronic feel to it. New instruments, new sounds but same Editors.
There's some interesting trivia accompanying these videos, because Fly Music TV closed forever just one year later in 2008. What replaced it? The Disney Channel. Weird. Enjoy the chatter ;)

This, is really interesting stuff.
Recorded at Northumbria University on the day of Editors' show there, 11th October 2019, here's Justin being interviewed backstage by the good folks at the Anyone Can Play Guitar podcast. This full length was chat was originally chopped and released over three separate episodes last year, but this is the first time it's been made available to listen to in full as a cohesive experience.
Unless I've been believing a falsehood for the past 14 years, I think the there may have been a little bit of geographical wrong-footing when we hear about the origins of Editors. I don't want to be that irritating fan who jumps all over every mistake, honestly I don't, but Editors actually requested Justin's services in 2012 for the two shows they had in Birmingham (where most of us were convinced they'd end up splitting), Main Square in France, a giant Werchter appointment and then XFM Winter Wonderland.
It's rare that we get a full length interview that solely focuses on Justin, without any input from his fellow bandmates. I love times where I learn something new, in spite of my own occasionally complacent sense of the knowledge I already possess. It keeps me humble. This interview is full of such lessons. I won't detail them all, but the ones connected to Justin actually becoming an Editor were a revelation. Any notion of a smooth and orderly transition are dispelled pretty quickly.
Before I heard this I know I respected Justin as a musician, I think even more of him now just as a human being. Well done to Ben an James for drawing this out and to Mr Lockey for being willing to open up. Enjoy ;)

If you're a collector of Gary's recordings then it's time to make some more room, as this is another one of his digital memories of a night in Manchester back in 2010. Many thanks again to you, Sir, for the travel and the recording. It's a pleasure to be able to offer all of your Editors related work in one place for existing and future fans to appreciate ;)
March was a busy month for the band in 2010 which saw them performing a total of 18 shows in 31 days, all of which were set up during October of 2009 as they were completing a sold out tour. Camera reclaims a spot on the setlist for this one, and it sounds sensational. There's a sense of everything clicking together, Ed's drums, King Leetch's bass, Mr Urbanowicz's guitar which has a much more audible effect across the notes he plays and the way Tom finishes it all off with a very definite "out". Sadly, there's very little banter between band and crowd at this show, although they do shout Russell's name an awful lot, with one gentleman even telling him to "Go, baby! Go!". Well indeed. Enjoy the music ;)

Here's a brief 5 minute podcast with Tom on one of Australia's popular radio stations, Triple J. I don't have an exact date for this, but it was sometime in 2005. The DJ conducting the interview is Richard Kingsmill, and it includes details of how Editors got together and the events surrounding their signing to Kitchenware Records. The last 30 seconds are pretty funny as Tom mentions obsessive fans, and a lot of you folks may recognise yourselves in the description...

If you're not a sports fan, and believe me I empathise, this is still worth listening to for the ever reliable Urbanowicz and Lay charisma. This original 5 Live radio broadcast featured the single version of Papillon being played, and they referenced some older Back Room numbers in the intro. In keeping with the Archive's policy of not sharing officially released material those portions of the show have been escorted to the door, booked a taxi, and sent home in a mood of quiet guilt to think about what they did. Up next are Tom and Chris playing 2 songs that were recorded live on the 5th November 2005 as part of "Faits Divers" on Radio Dijon Campus. I believe that this was actually the first session that anybody recorded for the show. Tom and Chris dust off their acoustic guitars and take us through a version of Munich, and French Disko, which is a cover of a song by Stereolab. The only downside here is that the whole thing is filmed on a single camera, and so there's no change in picture or different angles explored. Instead, it just allows all the focus to be exclusively on the music...which I guess is actually not a downside at all. Enjoy the tunes ;)
