Okay, so we are not truly dissolving the gold, we are actually forming an alloy between the gold and the mercury (called an amalgam).
This process is not only cool to look at, but it also is really useful to extract gold from ore. The gold-mercury amalgam can then be isolated and the mercury is boiled off or removed chemically. This leaves behind relatively pure gold.
This is the final part of the series, where the p-aminophenol is converted to the acetaminophen.
Using acetic anhydride, the p-aminophenol is going to be acetylated. The reaction is carried out in water at room temperature.
Acetic anhydride does react with water, but it happens slowly. By including an excess of acetic anhydride, we can assure that the acetylation goes to completion.

In this video, I drop a penny into nitric acid and I let it react until it completely disappears.

I never planned to cover this topic, because honestly I had no idea that it existed. It's really interesting what you can just stumble onto.
In the future, I might revisit this and I might also try making other metal sponges.

Today I'm going to be doing one of the weirdest chemical reactions I've ever seen.

-------------------------------------------------
Back in October, I tried making ferrofluid but I kept failing and I ended up giving up for a while.
Months later though, I got inspired, and I spent an insane amount of time researching ferrofluid and trying to make it. It was a very messy and sometimes frustrating process, but I was eventually successful. The method that I came up with still isn't perfect, but as far as I know, it's the best and most functional method available on the internet.

Hey guys, in this video, we dissolve some cellulose in water and then precipitate it using an acid solution to produce rayon.

In a previous video, I described my accidental discovery of lead sponge, which you can see here https://youtu.be/1-NbDjxh_v0
A lot of you guys had questions and I decided to try and answer them. However, it ended up raising even more questions for me. So I embarked on a little journey of discovery to try and get to the bottom of it. I still have a bunch of questions though, and I hope you guys can help answer them.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! If there are any errors in this video...well, whatever. I finished editing last night at 3am.
This video took a lot of work (50+ hours actual work + 16 to edit :s. All done in 6 days). It might not seem like it though.

In this video, I'll be attempting to make ferrofluid from the ferric chloride and ferrous sulfate that I made in a previous video. At first, I thought that this project would be really straightforward, but it turned out to be much more difficult than I thought.
I am going to be working more on this project, and I hope that soon I'll have an easy method to make it from relatively easy to get chemicals and supplies.
