Jacob powers a fan with the amplified electrical signal from ‘the duck song’. In order to make the fan spin however, a full bridge rectifier is added in series with the fan so as to ensure the current is flowing in one direction only.
The wind produced by the fan is then blown onto a loudspeaker (which is acting as a microphone) which is connected to an amplifier.
Amazingly, the sound of the duck song is picked up and amplified!

If you’ve read this far…I’ll come clean..the sound is not carried by air in the form of wind from the fan. Rather (and you can just detect this if you watch and listen carefully) the motor is actually acting like a miniature loudspeaker. DC motors contain magnets and coils of wire similar to loudspeakers. So in actual fact the DC motor itself is producing the music..this music is then picked up my the loudspeaker…..

Jacob makes Touch Powder, otherwise known as Pixie Dust.
It explodes with a loud crack and a big puff of purple smoke (Iodine Vapour).
He absolutely hates it, because it’s unpredictable, and makes a lot of mess and smells bad.
Hopefully you enjoy the episode more than I enjoyed making it!

On the 9th April 2016, Jacob Strickling appeared on the Weekend Today Show Channel Nine.
He had a five minute slot to do three Science demonstrations for the hosts, Peter Stefanovic and Amelia Adams.
Demo 1: Blew out candles using smoke vortex rings blown out of a garbage can.
Demo 2: Flour flame. Blow plain cooking flour out of a funnel into a flame. The particles have such a large surface area, they readily combust making a huge ball of flame.
Demo 3: Igniting gas bubbles in the hands. First hands are wet with water, then gas bubbles are scooped up and ignited. The water protects the skin, and only the gas bubbles burn.
It was awesome fun! To watch the episode as it aired on Channel Nine click the link below:

Happy April Fools everybody! I tried this new money in the cup trick with Mikalah and Sam. The first time round with Mikalah it backfired on me because Mikalah is just too smart and new there was a trick involved and so took a risk (and won). Sam didn't over think it and was very determined to keep his eye on the cup and win the money. Which he did...sort of!

You have until Sunday 25th January 2015 to solve the amazing pendulum Magic Mind Power and submit an explanation of how legoman got each of the balls, in turn, to oscillate. What Science was involved? What was behind the scenes to make it happen?
Come on you Physics students! You can work it out!
Submit via comment, facebook, email, or google circles.
