Worm Wednesday Feeding the natural bedding bin
This was my original worm bin that I converted into my natural bedding bin. I harvest the castings and sifted with a 1/8” screen. The castings were a little dry so I added water to them before storing them. Feeding the red wigglers some pulp and a half a mini watermelon. I added ground eggshells over the entire bin because of all of the new bedding.

6/4/2022 First garden tour. End of May, a lot still needs to be planted.
I need to plant so many things out still but I will get it done. It will just be a few weeks later than I would of liked it to be. Asparagus did great this season (2nd year for me first season they were 2 year crowns) I got about 3-4 packs that you would buy from the store from them. They have now ferned out to focus on growing the roots and saving energy for next year. The raised garden beds I started planting today and trying a little experiment. My one broccoli plant is the best looking broccoli I’ve ever grown. Still no head though. Strawberries are doing well but they were sticking through the cage and were nibbled on. So this was my first strawberry of the season. Horseradish is a beast, when I harvested last year. I cleaned up the horseradish that I prepared and then stuck pieces back into the bed. The shed has finally arrived. Garlic is looking good I’ve never grown hard neck garlic but I will need to harvest the scapes soon. I still need to figure out where to plant the thornless black berry. And lastly I will have to construct new growing areas because the shed is in the old garden space.

I started a new position at work at the end of April. I drive around a hour now to and from work. So I’m losing around 30 minutes in the morning and 40 minutes in the evening to the drive.

Trim dead flowers and leaves off hibiscus to keep healthy.
Deadheading your flowers is a great way to inspire your hibiscus to produce more flowers. And removing dead or dying leaves helps to reduce the risk of disease spreading. As always when using cutting tools clean before moving on to a new plant.

4/17/2022 Planting peas in a cinder block raised garden bed.
We found an easel in a closet that hasn't been used for years. It has now been converted into a trellis for the peas to climb. After the easel was pushed into the cinder block raised garden bed, I planted 3 pea transplants on each of the legs. This will allow the pea plants to grow up climbing the easel with their tendrils.

Building a new raised garden bed kit
I order this DIY raised garden bed kit on Amazon for $69.99 the garden beds dimensions are 4’ wide x 8’ long x 1’ high. The kit assembled quickly and easily. There are no tools included so at minimum you would need a screw driver and a pair of pliers. Definitely be careful of sharp edges the top and bottom sides of the bed is rolled over but the sides and corner are just cut metal. Overall very pleased with the look and feeling of the bed for $70. I’m not sure how long it will hold up, time will tell.

1/30/2022 Pruning fruit bearing trees in a young backyard orchard
With waiting until all the leaves fall off the tree all of the energy is stored down in the roots for the following spring. This tends to be the best time to prune your trees. We are pruning crossing branches, v-branches, and other branches based on the fruit tree.
Here is the planting of the fruit trees: https://youtu.be/GUpQ5pxIbsY
Fruit trees in order they appear:
Kieffer
Moonglow
Honeycrisp
Pink Lady
Belle of Georgia
Elberta
I want to try and keep these fruit trees manageable and limit the extra equipment that need to be used for harvesting the fruit.
