From https://www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pages/pool-winterization-vlog.html this video talks about one of the most misunderstood aspects to closing and winterizing a swimming pool in a cold climate area. The process of air locking a main drain is similar to the process of covering one end of a straw with your finger and submerging it in liquid. The inside of the straw remains empty due to the star being "air locked". With a pool main drain you would blow air from the pool pump, through the suction line, all the way to the main drain in the floor of the deep end of the pool. While bubbles are coming out from the return, and with the air blower still running, you simply close and isolate the main drain line with the isolation valve. This valve acts like a finger over the end of a straw (your main drain pipe) and prevents water from refilling the main drain line. This requires that the main drain pipe and isolation valve are 100% leak free or else the water will slowly refill the main drain pipe over the winter season, which could likely lead to freeze related damage in the pipe.

If it gets really bad you could acid wash your swimming pool plaster understanding that acid washing deteriorates the pool plaster surface the more often it is done and really is a last resort only to be considered in extreme circumstances. Swimming pool plaster, after time, will need to be refinished and the older and more porous it is, the more susceptible it is to staining. If you are dealing with staining issues on your pool plaster you should definitely pick up a Jack's Magic Stain Identification kit made just for this purpose. You need to know what the stain is before you can know how to remove it.
