Alex Chen, a young Asian-American woman who has grown up in a foster family and has had a troubled childhood, reunites with her brother Gabe eight years later when he encourages her to return. After Gabe is killed in a mysterious accident, Alex investigates the truth behind the accident by using her empathy powers. Along the way, Alex meets many citizens of Colorado's picturesque mountain town of Haven Springs, including two potential love interests, Ryan and Steph, the latter of whom appeared in Life Is Strange: Before the Storm.[4][6][7]

In May 2019, Alex (Erika Mori) leaves the Helping Hands Group Home after 8 years to reunite with her brother Gabe (Han Soto) in Haven Springs, Colorado. The siblings reunite and Gabe shows Alex around Haven, which primary employment is mining company Typhon. While waiting for Gabe to bring his girlfriend Charlotte flowers, Alex meets Charlotte's son Ethan, who tells her that he wants to explore an old mine in the nearby mountains. Subsequently, Alex wants to buy Gabe a gift and meets park ranger Ryan (Eric Emery) and radio DJ Steph (Katy Bentz), who are friends of Gabe. While Gabe shows Alex his apartment and offers it as a gift to Alex, they get interrupted by Typhon employee Mac who believes Gabe cheated on his girlfriend Riley and attacks Gabe. The attack causes Alex's "emotions" to attack Mac and defend Gabe. Gabe stops Alex and injured Mac leaves. Local bar owner Jed offers Alex work as a server, while Gabe is getting medical aid by Charlotte. Later Alex and Gabe reunite but Ryan interrupts to inform them that Ethan went missing. The three search the mountains for Ethan and Gabe calls Typhon to cancel a blast in the area. Eventually they find Ethan near a cliff and Alex rescues him, but the blast goes off anyway. The explosion causes Gabe to fall into the cliff, while still being secured with a rope to Alex. With boulders from the explosion approaching them, Ryan cuts the rope between Alex and Gabe, causing Gabe to fall. Days later at Gabe's wake, the attendees get into an argument about the cause, with Ryan questioning Mac, who should have received Gabe's call. Alex leaves for Gabe's apartment and finds Steph there, who after initial comforting Alex, gets devastated about Gabe's death. After a detailed investigation and helping the townsfolk, Alex unveils the ugly truth about the town.
