Kick off Lent of 2024 right with daily meditations for Lent from the famous French orator, Bishop Jacques-Benigne Bossuet.
As we stand on the threshold of another Lenten season, I invite you to embark on a journey of the soul with me. Lend me your ears each morning for a series of daily meditations, this time drawing upon the profound insights of Bishop Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet. Father Paul Check graces us with an introduction that paves the way for our first steps into the Ash Wednesday reflection, where we contemplate the transformative power of an open heart during Lent. Together, let's venture through these days of solemn reflection, preparing our spirits for the joy and renewal that Easter heralds.
Feel the rhythm of this Lenten season with our extended series of daily meditations, thoughtfully prepared to accompany you on each day of this contemplative period. Tune in as we release new episodes every morning, like clockwork, across a variety of platforms—be it YouTube, your favorite audio podcast space, or our SpiritusTV and Locals community for subscribers. Your presence and participation in this sacred time is a gift, and I am honored to share this space with you. May these reflections serve as a guide to a more profound understanding and connection with our faith, and lead us to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Avoiding Babylon was started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these difficult and dark days, when most of us were isolated from family, friends, our parishes, and even the Sacraments themselves, this channel was started as a statement of standing against the tyrannical mandates that many of us were living under. Since those early days, this channel has morphed into an amazing community of friends…no…more than friends…Christian brothers and sisters…who have grown in joy and charity.
Avoiding Babylon does not criticize the hierarchy or institutional Church, especially Pope Francis. We recognize there is an unprecedented crisis in the Church, but we feel that there are other shows that address these issues that are more qualified than us. Instead, we try to remind ourselves and those who enjoy the channel that being Catholic is a joyful and exciting experience. We seek true Catholic fraternity and eutrapelia with other Catholics who, like us, are doing their best to live out their vocation with the help of God’s Grace. Above all, we try to bring humor and joy to the craziness of this fallen world, for as Hillaire Belloc has famously said:
“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,
There’s always laughter and good red wine.
At least I’ve always found it so.
Benedicamus Domino!”

Embark with us on an intellectual odyssey where the bedrock of faith meets the high seas of scientific inquiry concerning the creation narrative. Our latest episode traverses the landscape of creation, evolution, and the enduring debates that arise at their intersection. We open up about personal backlashes for questioning established scientific narratives, as well as the cultural shockwaves sent by challenging iconic events like the moon landing. Through a lens both critical and curious, we scrutinize the Genesis account, asking not for its scientific accuracy but for its historical resonance and the patterns of fall and redemption that echo into New Testament fulfillment.
Joined by Michael from the Lepanto Institute, our conversation is enriched with his insights, creating a tapestry of thought that weaves through the fabric of creation myths across cultures. We dissect the intricacies of the creation narrative, considering its foundational role within the Christian doctrine, and question whether miracles can stand under the scrutiny of a scientific framework. The episode doesn't shy away from tough questions, examining the potential conflicts in reconciling theistic evolution with scriptural accounts and pondering the broader implications of merging secular and religious worldviews on the integrity of faith.
As we wrap this thought-provoking session, we extend a heartfelt thank you to Michael for his collaborative spirit and hint at future episodes that promise deeper dives into biblical texts such as Esther. We offer an invitation to our listeners to support Michael's forthcoming endeavors and keep an ear out for the impactful projects he's set to unveil. Tune in for a journey that's as much about understanding the past as it is about shaping a perspective on the evolving relationship between spirituality and scientific understanding.

Imagine feeling an indescribable sense of peace the moment you meet your spouse, knowing that your love will be deeply rooted in your faith. Our guest, author Patrick O'Hearn, shares his journey from growing up Catholic to embracing his faith and finding his spouse at Franciscan University. In our conversation, we discuss his book, Courtship of the Saints: How the Saints Met Their Spouses.
Diving deeper into the lives of married saints, we explore their hidden holiness, the process of canonization, and the difference between courtship and modern dating. Patrick shares his experience interviewing St. Gianna Molla's daughter and finding other married saints for his book, as well as the heroic love of Venerable Vittorio Trancanelli and his wife, who adopted seven children, some with special needs. Learn about the importance of involving the woman's father in courtship and how couples' preparation for marriage can have a profound effect on the outcome.
Finally, we discuss examples of docility and submissiveness in the lives of Mary and the saints, the ideal dynamic between a husband and wife, and the importance of men actively cherishing their wives. Our conversation also delves into the romantic love between Pietro and Gianna Molla, Zellie and Louis Martin, and how Catholics have the best love life of any group. Discover the 'third ring of marriage' and the importance of suffering in relationships, as well as inspiring stories of married saints and their spouses' sacrifices for their faith.
