Force Shields for Space Travel One of the most dangerous aspects of space travel is radiation. Solar radiation from the sun is important but galactic radiation is also very deadly. Galactic radiation is produced by energetic events in and outside our galaxy… stars go supernova… black holes accelerate and eject particles at near light speed…. Neutron stars collide…creating new elements and sending billions of tons of high-speed atoms … Iron is the final product of mature stellar fusion… as the star explodes in a supernova and sends elements speeding away some of the iron atoms make their way over millions of years to our solar system… With nothing to slow them down they are still traveling at relativistic velocities when they finally impact… If that impact is with a spaceship, or space colonist, it is exactly like being hit by the world’s most powerful supercollider… The heavy nucleus…called a z particle when accelerated like this…creates a spray of neutron and other radiation that is very damaging to humans… Since these particles are coming from every direction in space, we would quickly develop medical problems… Neurons in the brain don’t replace themselves as often as cells in the other tissues…the continued loss of neurons over time to galactic radiation will start to cause the neural net to fail…something we call dementia… DNA in our cells get hit sometimes…we can repair most nuclear DNA damage but no repair mechanism is perfect and errors will start to occur…mitochondrial DNA has no repair mechanism and the generation of nonfunctional mitochondria are a big part of the disease we call aging… You will age faster in space… and go blind…radiation particles punching through the retina will cause permanent damage... The computer systems we need for our survival will start to fail also… A sudden solar storm…also called a coronal mass ejection or CME…can kill us if we can’t find sufficient shelter… We must block this radiation somehow… The founders of our colonies on the Moon and Mars will build habitats shielded by meters of Martian or lunar regolith. But what about our ships in open space? Even if we have a storm shelter to go to with sufficient water shielding what about the ship systems? One vital technology to space exploration will be superconduction. Superconductors will be used for our high speed rail transport… space craft shielding and energy storage. Superconducting is what we call an electrical conducting material that has zero resistance. Some materials are electrical insulators…they do not easily allow the flow of electricity. Other substances through which you pass a current more easily will be electrical conductors. These are usually metals…which have loosely attached electrons that can move easily through the wire. At room temperature almost all of these have energy loss…in the form of heat. This resistance to the flow of electricity was used to create the first electric lights. Copper wires with low resistance would bring the electrons into a bulb where there was a near vacuum with no oxygen. The copper wire was attached to a coil of tungsten…tungsten can resist heat better than any other element. Its melting point is 3,422 Celsius. The coil of tungsten would get white hot and generate light. Only a small percentage of the energy put into the bulb was converted to light…the rest was lost as heat. This was the useful result of electrical resistance. One scientist discovered that as metals got colder their resistance dropped. Being curious he cooled the metal mercury down to just above absolute zero…which remember is 0 kelvin or -273.15 Centigrade…and the resistance went away completely. There was no resistance at all to the flow of electricity. This had been thought impossible and new physics had to be developed to explain this result. It turned out that at certain temperatures pairs of electrons would become free to travel through the matrix of metal atoms without any resistance at all. This would be very useful as a lot of electricity is wasted in power lines and electrical motors from resistance generating heat. Alternating current is used to reduce some of this resistance as direct current causes the most resistance. The race was on to find a higher temperature superconducting material. These two materials can be fabricated into wires and can withstand high magnetic fields. Typical construction of the coils is to embed a large number of fine filaments ( 20 micrometers diameter) in a copper matrix. The solid copper gives mechanical stability and provides a path for the large currents in case the superconducting state is lost. These superconducting magnets must be cooled with liquid helium.
