Frank Farmer has contributed important essays to the study of Bakhtin in composition, and in Saying and Silence he gathers some of those, along with several new essays, into a single volume. Scholars who specialize in Bakhtin will find this work engaging, but equally Farmer wants to explicate and apply Bakhtin for readers whose focus is teaching or some other nonspecialist dimension of writing scholarship. Farmer explores the relationship between the meaningful word and the meaningful pause, between saying and silence, especially as the relationship emerges in our classrooms, our disciplinary conversations, and encounters with publics beyond the academy. Each of his chapters here addresses some aspect of how we and our students, colleagues, and critics have our say and speak our piece, often under conditions where silence is the institutionally sanctioned and preferred alternative. He has enlisted a number of Bakhtinian ideas (the superaddressee, outsideness, voice in dialogue) to help in the project of interpreting the silences we hear, naming the silences we do not hear, and of encouraging all silences to speak in ways that are freely chosen, not enforced.

As seventeenth-century England wrestled with the aftereffects of the Reformation, the personal frequently conflicted with the political. In speeches, political pamphlets, and other works of religious controversy, writers from the reign of James I to that of James II unexpectedly erupt into autobiography. John Milton famously interrupts his arguments against episcopacy with autobiographical accounts of his poetic hopes and dreams, while John Donne's attempts to describe his conversion from Catholicism wind up obscuring rather than explaining. Similar moments appear in the works of Thomas Browne, John Bunyan, and the two King Jameses themselves. These autobiographies are familiar enough that their peculiarities have frequently been overlooked in scholarship, but as Brooke Conti notes, they sit uneasily within their surrounding material as well as within the conventions of confessional literature that preceded them.Confessions of Faith in Early Modern England positions works such as Milton's political tracts, Donne's polemical and devotional prose, Browne's Religio Medici, and Bunyan's Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners as products of the era's tense political climate, illuminating how the pressures of public self-declaration and allegiance led to autobiographical writings that often concealed more than they revealed. For these authors, autobiography was less a genre than a device to negotiate competing political, personal, and psychological demands. In this book, Sweeney explores how some incarcerated women use the limited reading materials available to them to come to terms with their pasts, mediate their present experiences, and ready themselves for their futures. Drawing on extensive interviews with ninety-four women incarcerated in North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, Sweeney examines their reading practices and strategies and focuses particularly on their responses to fictional crime narratives, stories of victimization, and self-help and inspirational books. Sweeney draws attention to the experiences of African American women, expands the history of reading in prisons by exploring its shifting roles over time, and complicates the notion of bibliotherapy in the prison setting. She hopes to bring these women and their lives in prison into relief--to counter common narratives about crime or justice, to show them as readers and thinkers even when out of public sight, and to uncover their understandings of silence, agency, and resistance. While Sweeney sees reading programs as highly valuable to individual lives (especially as a practice of freedom in conditions of confinement), she explores the complicated relationship of these programs to prison reform. Also, she explores women's reading strategies and enhances our understanding of how women build meaning through stories and narratives both similar and different to their own lives. Sweeney's lively writing should benefit the book's reaching across many disciplines.
