Jeff Deist discusses the idea that the best path forward for America may be some kind of peaceful breakup. He reminds us that America has never truly been one country, the way that, for instance, many small European nations are—and indeed the United States was never really supposed to be a single unified monolith. With such a diversity of culture over such a huge geographical area, a federal government was meant to serve a very limited purpose while leaving most decisions up to the individual states. Deist and Scott see today’s culture war as a symptom of an unhealthy and unconstitutional growth of executive and federal power, which turns every national political debate into a fight for absolute control. Deist hopes that we can find an answer to America’s division in the form of decentralization or peaceful secession before it comes to any kind of open ciil war—an outcome that nobody wants to see.

Hunter DeRensis talks about his recent article on Bill Kristol’s new publication, The Bulwark, which he sees as a direct successor to the Weekly Standard, and a new home for the “Never Trump” movement. The Standard made a name for itself by pushing for the invasion of Iraq, and more recently has supported America’s other wars in the Middle East. Because the publication opposes President Trump on basically every issue, they’ve been on the wrong side of his recent plans to withdraw troops as well.
Hunter DeRensis, formerly of The American Conservative magazine, is a writer for The National Interest. Find him on his website or on Twitter @HunterDeRensis.

Jacob Hornberger, founder and president of the Future of Freedom Foundation, discusses “The War on Terrorism, the Constitution, and Civil Liberties” college speaking tour, featuring Jacob, Bruce Fein and Glenn Greenwald from February 6th-9th; the rising tide of Americans who refuse to trade liberty for “security,” 9/11 justification be damned; reasserting the legal and constitutional limitations on government power; and the slippery slope of War on Terror abuses, such that the indefinite detention and torture of American citizens is the new normal.

Ramzy Baroud discusses the often-forgotten Palestinian Christian minority, which faces all the same problems at the hands of their Israeli occupiers that the Palestinian Muslims do. People in the U.S. are often surprised to learn how many Christians there are in Palestine, but Baroud reminds us that this is the oldest Christian region in the world, and once had a huge population of practicing Christians. Today that population is dwindling as they are either forced out of their land, or leave voluntarily in response to Israeli hostility, never to return. Baroud dispels the rumors that Christians are leaving due to tensions with the Palestinian Muslims, alongside whom they have thrived for generations.
Ramzy Baroud is a US-Arab journalist and is the editor-in-chief of the Palestine Chronicle. He is the author of My Father Was A Freedom Fighter: The Untold Story of Gaza. His new book is The Last Earth: A Palestinian Story. Follow Ramzy on Twitter @RamzyBaroud and read his work at RamzyBaroud.net.

Thomas R. Eddlem, freelance writer and contributor to The New American, discusses his article on a Tea Party founder’s legal battles, “Railroading of Walter Reddy: Patriot’s Legally Owned Guns Seized;” the low burden of proof required by the state to take away guns from their law-abiding owners; Reddy’s intent to file an FOIA request to find out why he’s an FBI “person of interest;” how the FBI seems to be profiling conservatives and advocates of alternative currencies in its search for domestic terrorists; and Reddy’s attempt to consult with states interested in using gold and silver as currencies.

Glenn Greenwald, Salon.com blogger and author of With Liberty and Justice for Some: How the Law Is Used to Destroy Equality and Protect the Powerful, discusses WIRED magazine’s much-delayed release of the full Bradley Manning/Adrian Lamo chat logs; the lies and omissions from Lamo and WIRED editors Evan Hansen and Kevin Poulsen; newly revealed information that could aid Manning’s legal defense (like Lamo’s claim of confidentiality); and the very weak connection between Manning and WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange.
