Vardzia
This episode of The Nudge takes up deep into Southern Georgia, to visit the impressive ancient cave dwellings that make up the Bronze-age monastery of Vardzia. Composed of 500 rooms, and spanning 500 meters and up to 19 levels, you really get a feel for how many people occupied this small city carved into the face of a mountain. Today it is restored — navigable by most able-bodied people, but the narrow passageways, steep steps, secret tunnels, and rooms still present a challenge.
Should you want to visit this place, it is reachable by marshrutka (public van), taxi (significantly more expensive but still affordable), personal car, or organized tour. I'd advise being mindful of schedule, and arriving early, because the last public transportation marshrutka back to Akhaltsikhe leaves at 3pm, and there's not much traffic for hitchhiking. This trip can be done for as little as 25 Lari ($8 USD) in September 2021 — 5 lari for the marshrutka, 15 lari entry fee, and another 5 lari to get back.
I have a few more episodes in Georgia left to publish, but am already planning my next trip, to see more monasteries and witness the breathtaking nature of Sakartvelo's rural regions. I would definitely recommend this day trip, and visiting this country in general. Georgia is an affordable, friendly, and beautiful place!
