As the Supreme Court began hearing arguments in Hawaii v. Trump to decide whether one of President Trump's latest "Muslim Ban" policies violates federal law, activists outside condemned the travel ban as unconstitutional and unhelpful to national security.
The ban prevents nationals from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. The Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether the policy discriminates against a particular religious group and whether President Trump has the constitutional authority to impose it.
"We have a toddler in the White House. A preschooler who thinks the constitution is a toy to be played with and thrown away when he is bored by its protections," said Nihad Awad, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Set up around the podium were six giant passport posters, each marked "rejected" to symbolize the countries affected by the ban. Included in the latest iteration of the ban are Iran, Libya, Somalia, Chad, Syria, and Yemen, as well as North Korea and Venezuela. Iraq and Sudan were listed on previous versions but have since been dropped following security assurances. Although the executive order does not mentioned Islam by name, most of the nations impacted are majority Muslim.
"It is a false choice to say that somehow our national security depends on banning Muslims," said Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. "That is just playing to the racism and the Islamaphobia that is already out there."
Isra Chaker, refugee campaign manager for Oxfam, said that "The Muslim ban has torn families apart and shot at their ability to be reunited. It is cruel, and it is heartless."
"We need to stop repeating history," added David Inoue, Executive Director of Japanese American Citizen League.
"I believe all Americans have a responsibility to challenge it on constitutional grounds, on moral grounds, on ethical grounds," said Zainab Chaudry, an American Muslim civil rights and political activist. "It's just devastating to see our country heading in this direction."

As a right wing groups protested Thursday outside a Drag Story Hour in Jackson Heights, New York, neo-Nazi Jovi Val arrived along with a man wearing a skull mask who threw a Roman Salute.
"If you're doing the Roman Salute, get the f*** out of here," a man wearing Proud Boys gear told the apparent Nazi.
"Why you bringing them to our side? Get them out of here!"
"You're worse than them!" one yelled, apparently referring to counter-protesters supporting the drag event.

Right-wing and antifa groups faced each other for a second time in Boston on Saturday, as the "Rally for the Republic" brought out hundreds across both sides to Boston Common.
Conservative groups organized the rally, headlined by popular right-wing figures including Kyle "Based Stickman" Chapman, as part of an ongoing effort following Trump's election to confront a perceived suppression of right-wing voices in liberal areas. Despite being denied a permit by the city citing traffic complications, organizers Resist Marxism and Boston Free Speech held steadfast, claiming a right to peaceably assemble under the First Amendment.
"There's a systematic oppression of people of right-wing thought and ideology, by the city council, the police are involved in it, and the populace is involved in it," Chapman said, referring to cities like Boston and San Francisco as "Marxist enclaves." "We have to keep pushing back, wear our MAGA hats, let these people know we're conservatives, we're libertarians, we're nationalists, we're proud and we're not going to sit and hide in the shadows just because we're in a liberal city."
After marching into the park from City Hall, police funneled about one hundred right-wing supporters past a considerably larger gathering of counter-protesters, including local anti-fascist blocs Bay State Red Sentinels and Bash Back Boston. Dual barriers of concentric fencing and a large contingent of police with bicycles separated the two sides during a rally which lasted about an hour.
"We hope to disrupt this rally, they don't have anything to say here," said one masked antifa protester affiliated with Bash Back Boston, a group sharing a name with an anarchist queer collective which dissolved on the national level in 2011. "Boston doesn't want them. White supremacists are homophones and transphobes, we don't like them here."
There were no clashes during Saturday's event. Boston Police arrested three counter-protesters shortly after the rally concluded. WCVB helicopter footage showed police lifting one protester, dressed in all black, out of the crowd following a brief scuffle. It is unclear what the three protesters were charged with. Over 30 protesters were arrested following clashes at the August free speech rally.
