Rare Volkswagens: What's In the Shop - What's In the Dream
In this week's shop tour, you'll see progress on Fetterman's 1960 VW Split Bus, Mark's Porsche 914-S, Range's Zwitter, and Gazzo's Ghia.
Plus, we asked Spook about the rarest classic VW ever... (do you know it?) and the rare Volkswagens currently at the shop. There are two (do you know which ones?).
Spook ran into some trouble with new in the box (but still a decade old) window seals. Stone's doing pre-fit fixes on the Zwitter before it goes back to the paint shop. Shannon's helping a new client arrange to bring their old Beetle in for a bumper to bumper check so we can help get it back on the road. Alex is bending metal for the rear quarter windows for the 1965 Karmann Ghia. Darren's working on another Targa top for the vintage Porsche with Rodney.
Busy week, and we've got Rusty Bus on deck. Wait until you see it's "before" state about halfway through this video. This will be one of the most extensive rust repairs the shop has ever undertaken. Can they do it???
Not afraid of hard work? Well, folks, here's your opportunity to test that out. You've got 11 minutes and 52 seconds of watching Stone remove dented metal from Dan's 1959 Double Door VW Panel Bus.
It doesn't get much more die-hard fan than this. But we do hear that these "No Talky-Talky... Just Worky-Worky" over-the-shoulder videos are popular among insomniacs. I mean, some of the best naps I ever took involved a PGA golf tournament playing in the background. And since there's no professional sports action happening these days, you take what you can get, right? THIS should fit the bill.
But seriously, each Saturday we present, for your Dub enjoyment, a walkthrough of what's going on at the shop that week. We give updates on the projects that are in active restoration. We answer questions from the world of VWs. It's kinda cool watching the projects take shape.
Then, each Sunday, we do one of these videos to show what actually goes into the various stages of restoration. Usually, we speed them up (we're not monsters!). But if you've ever wondered why getting a top-notch VW restoration done costs so much - or takes so long - just know that many, many of the phases of each restoration require this much labor. We don't even bill for nearly all the time the guys spend working... it's just that we MUST do the work as well as we can, even if it takes a ridiculous amount of work. Our goal is that in 50-70 years, when these vehicles are ready for their next restoration, whatever shop takes the project on is like, "Right on, man, whoever restored this way back in 2020 did it right" instead of "WHAT were these bozos thinking????"
We're also more than a little obsessed with keeping as many of these old beauties on the road for as long as possible. It's a legacy, a labor of love, and while none of us are here for the paycheck (and boy, if we were, we'd have to be nuts!), we're here for the joy of creating kinetic art you can drive.
If you like these videos, please let us know WHY in the comments! :) Like, subscribe, all that jazz... but really, 'splain yourself!
We truly appreciate you watching our weird stuff. Thanks.

Ever want to test your patience? Try removing a rusty choke cable from its channel. Josh was on this project and to his credit, no wrenches were thrown. Mere mortals may not have kept their kool quite as well. We sped it up 10x and cut out a bunch, but you'll get the idea.

What Happens When You Cross an Engineer with an Artist?
Easy – you get Spook. A vintage steel restoration guru with a passion for paint, Spook dreamed of Airkooled Kustoms long before opening the shop in Hazel Green in 2004.
The mastermind behind the proprietary processes that yield darkside dubs that Volkswagen and Porsche enthusiasts drool over, Spook doesn’t do anything halfway.
Ask him about buying a classic air-cooled vehicle made by Airkooled Kustoms, and you’ll probably be surprised to hear him advise against it.
See, the process is long, it’s expensive, and it requires a level of commitment few would-be buyers possess.
The process is not cheap. It is not for the faint of heart. If you CAN settle for anything other than driving an Airkooled Kustoms Classic Volkswagen or Porsche, you should. If settling is simply impossible, you should contact us and get your dream car onto the always-full production schedule.

Watch one of the best fabricators we've ever seen work his magic on this 1968 Karmann Ghia driver's side rear quarter and taillight area. Josh is wowing us on his first week at the shop.
We're fixing a prior repair. The steel had become brittle - a failure of over-repairs.

Spook gets this question a lot, so we figured we'd get him on the record on, "How much does a VW bus restoration cost?"
See, there's a HUGE difference between a full bus restoration and a resurrection. And ain't nuthin' wrong with just getting your VW bus operational, safe, and back on the roads. These rides were meant for fun - and you can have just as much fun in one that sports the patina of many, many miles and years as you can with one that's slick and shiny.
Here at Airkooled Kustoms, we do both. (In fact, be sure to keep an eye out for Christine, the 1959 VW Double Door Panel Bus, we're fixing up. She just got some faux patina that'll help the metalwork from her wreck match the patina she earned.) There are many VW shops that can do a solid resurrection for you - or you can DIY all day long!
But what we're really known for is the slick, shiny, shinier, shiny-er-er rides like what Christine's brother Rusty (the 1967 VW 21-Window Ragtop Bus) will be. (Same client, by the way!)
Anyhow, if you've ever wondered how much a VW bus costs to restore, you'll find out.
Plus, you'll see the other rides in the shop (it's a little crowded in there this week!).
Cabral's curtains are still underway (you can watch them being made in a video we'll post tomorrow).
Gazzo's 1965 Karmann Ghia is just sitting there looking stunning, waiting for parts.
Range's 1952 VW Beetle Ragtop (the Zwitter) is making great progress, got some sound deadening, and is about ready to be reassembled.
Robinson's 1963 is getting a new interior.
Rusty, the 1967 VW 21 Window Ragtop Bus is getting a suspension from Wagons West (on order!)
Christine, the 1959 VW Double Door Panel Bus, got the first round of a new old patina - orchestrated rust takes time!

We've seen this a few times: Someone takes their classic VW to a shop for a full restoration and ends up disappointed and out several thousand dollars.
Probably the worst case was the Karmann Ghia that was literally held together with zip ties! It looked gorgeous but was running a little funny. The clients had paid for a full resto somewhere else, but we're closer, so they brought the Ghia in for some TLC. When we put it on the lift, we were shocked to see it collapse on itself (think taco, upside down). That's when we discovered that the other shop had put it together with zip ties.
Even though that's pretty extreme, we see a lot of other smaller stuff that's pretty heartbreaking. Here's what we'd like you to know.
Plus, here's what's going on in the shop this week...
10:49 Park's Super Vert
12:02 Hersker's Euro
12:33 Riley's Ghia
12:43 Gazzo's Ghia
13:15 Isayo's Bug
14:04 Boggan's Bug
14:21 St. Pierre's Bus
14:36 Cabral's Westy
17:11 Riley's Ghia
