Today I review what may be the best $100 condenser microphone available right now, the Neat King Bee. This microphone wipes the floor with the AT2020, and offers a detailed and clear top end without getting sharp, and a robust low end without sounding boxy or boomy. All around, for $100, I think this microphone is a no brainer pick up for a home studio setup on a budget.

Today I review a clone of the classic Neumann U87, the Warm Audio WA-87. I compare this mic to the U87 Ai, an sE4400a, and a JZ Mics Vintage 11. This mic has a very punchy mid section and over all smooth sound that sounds excellent on acoustics and vocals, especially if you’re going for a more vintage sound. I am extremely impressed with this microphone as a mic on it’s own, however, it yields a very different sound compared to the U87.

Today I walkthrough, explain, and review the new Solid State Logic SSL2+ USB Audio Interface, demonstrate what the 4K switch does, test it with the SM7b, test it with electric guitar and electric bass, and even more. I also discuss the differences between the SSL2 and SSL2+ and why you might want this instead of something like the Motu M2. Overall this is a great sounding interface that offers a lot of features for musicians that may prove to be less beneficial for a simpler voice over work flow.

Today I review a new USB mic from Austrian Audio; the MiCreator. This is a USB mic that also expands to allow you to add an additional input (instrument, second mic capusle, or lav mic kit). The sound is fairly balanced with a controlled low end a slightly more midfocused sound due to no significant cuts, and then a relatively smooth upper frequency range.

Today I test a very cheap dynamic microphone from Samson that is under $20, the M10. This microphone has a very gritty top end, and rolls off above 12kHz. It. Is not the best sounding microphone, but it is tolerable, and when used with an audio interface, it performs better than a $15 microphone should.

Today I review a $20 budget handheld dynamic microphone from Behringer, the SL85S. This microphone is built well, it’s affordable, and comes with a nice case. For many use cases, it’s tolerable, but definitely not my first choice. I would most likely go for the XM8500 or BA85A from Behringer instead.
