Welcome To The Alton Square Mall, A Very Dead Mall With A Doomed Future! Let's Check It Out! ?History: - The Alton Square Mall Is A Shopping Mall Located In Alton, Illinois. It Was Originally Developed By May Centers, Inc.—The Mall Development Arm Of May Department Stores—& Opened In 1978. Its Current Anchors Are Ross Dress For Less & JCPenney. Sears Opened In 1997 As The Third Anchor, But Closed In June 2012. The Sears Site Was Later Made Into An Illinois Wholesale Furniture Store, Which Is Now Closed. Macy's—Which Had Opened As Famous-Barr Converted To Macy's In 2006—Was The Fourth Anchor Until It Closed In 2017. In 2009, A 10-Screen Premiere Cinemas Theater Was Announced For The Mall, But Never Opened. In 2015, The Ross Dress For Less & Hibbett Sports Store Was Added To The Mall. In March 2017, The Owner Of The Mall, Announced A Redevelopment Of The Mall. The Old Sears Site Would Be Made Into A Movie Theater, & The Macy's Building Would Be Demolished. As Part Of The Redevelopment, The Few Remaining Small Stores From The Second Level Would Be Moved To The First Level So They Could Have Room For 5 Anchor Stores, Which Didn't Happen. The Alton Square Mall Was Built Just As Any Other American Mall, With 70s Architecture, Classic Storefronts & Dazzling Anchors. As It’s Retail Past Faded Away, The Alton Square Mall Was Challenged With Overcoming These Problems.
