Pain and your body’s check engine light with Nate Deitz
In this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with (soon to be Dr.) Nate Deitz. Nate has joined me over at Connect My Brain and I’m so glad he was able to share with us today. As we talked, Nate shared a great analogy of pain being like the check engine light in a car. Getting rid of pain but not addressing the cause of the pain is like seeing the check engine light come on in your car and just covering it up with a piece of tape. Pain is your body’s way of telling you there is a problem that needs to be addressed. If you’re not getting to the root cause of that pain, you will never reach full health and you will likely see your health worsen. Nate is relatively new to the field of chiropractics but that doesn’t mean he isn’t really good at what he does. I loved talking with Nate and hearing his perspective and I think you’ll enjoy this conversation, too!
Everything we do can be linked back to reflexes. Reflexes that are firing at a heightened level can cause all kinds of chaos in a little person’s life. Many of the “behaviours” children struggle with can actually be explained when we take a look at their reflexes and whether or not they have integrated properly. It’s not innate in us to not be able to self-regulate so if things don’t seem to be functioning as expected, get a professional opinion. The earlier an intervention is made, the more easily a change can be made.

In this episode, I’ll tell you about a ten-year-old boy who first came into my office with ADHD, dyslexia, and a motor tic. Our goal was to help improve this boy’s focus and resolve hyperactivity without using medication.
In this case study, I cover more about what symptoms the child was experiencing, what kind of events in his patient history could have played a factor in how his brain got wired, and what kinds of assessments I used. Using a variety of assessments with my patients allows me to see how their brains have been wired up and figure out what kind of program might help their brains change and create new pathways. I truly love what I do and am so honored to be able to empower others with this kind of information. I hope this story will give you hope for your own child!

Kelly Collins brought her son to Connect My Brain when she didn’t know where else to turn. Kelly shares why she brought her son in, her expectations, and some of the hurdles they faced. Hearing Kelly’s story perspective is extremely powerful. Her son used to exhibit all kinds of difficult behaviours and as Kelly says herself, every day was rough. Now, the rough days come much less frequently and the root causes of her son’s behaviours have been identified, allowing Kelly to really work with her son based on his needs.
Kelly also shares her own honest review of Connect My Brain. She warns parents not to come in expecting a magic fix or expecting things to be easy, but she does offer a message of hope and encouragement for others in her shoes. Here at Connect My Brain, we want to learn about your child, understand what’s going on in their brains and bodies, and help you and your child change the patterns their brains have gotten stuck in.

In today’s episode, I will be sharing the case of a ten-year-old boy who was having problems with frustration and impulse control and who had suspected anxiety and depression. As I take you through this case study, I will also be giving you a deeper look at brain mapping – what I’m looking for and what it actually tells me.
Brain maps are an amazing tool I use when assessing a patient, but I never just look at the brain map. I also do other assessments and ask lots of questions to try to figure out what might be going on so that I can actually get to the root of the problem. After working with me, this boy made amazing progress and even asked to continue with some of the therapies for a few more weeks because he could see how much of a difference they made. Remember, it’s never too late to change your brain.

Neurofeedback is not just about fixing problems or dysregulations but can also be used to help an individual reach optimal performance.
The way we spend our time and the things we think about have a strong influence on the patterns in our brains. Anxiety and stress are normal human emotions but are not meant to run our lives. We should be able to feel stressed or anxious and then shut that feeling off when the threat or stressor has passed. In a chronic stress situation, these responses are never shutting off and cause long-term damage to our brains and bodies. You can do a few things to change these patterns, but I think neurofeedback is one of the most incredible tools out there. If you can see what’s going on in your brain then you can change it. With neurofeedback, we can literally train our brains!

Today we’re going to talk about the influence of chronic stress on adults. The longer stress goes on in our bodies, the larger the impact it has. However, you probably won’t notice this happening because it’s a very gradual change. Yet, if left unchecked, stress will eventually have an impact on every area of your life. In this episode, I’ll talk about areas where stress may be creeping in, why exercise is key to a healthy brain, what’s going on in a brain with PTSD, and the good news – that you can change your brain!

I think it’s extremely unfortunate that our traditional healthcare system makes it seem like once you have a problem or get a label you’re just stuck with it. I believe that healthcare practitioners need to work together and really open our minds to the possibilities of what we can do to bring restoration to our patients.
When it comes to school, parents are stressed about how their kids are doing and being told that their kids are holding the rest of the class back and that they need to be medicated for the greater good. I don’t want you to feel stressed or defeated if you hear this. I want you to feel empowered!
As a parent, you do not need to feel like medication is the only option for your child. In this episode I’ll share some of the common obstacles that could be impeding your child’s capacity to learn and what kind of help is available if you have a child who is struggling.

In this episode I talk about how the specific impacts of stress on the elderly population and I also share a little bit of my own mom’s story of stressful events and how they have drastically impacted her health. I’ve seen firsthand how stress can wreak havoc on a person’s quality of life. Your health and your brain could already be impacted by stress. So start asking questions and get that stress under control while you can!

Today I want to share a case with you of a child who was toe-walking. At first glance, toe-walking might seem harmless. You might think the child just prefers it, but in reality, toe-walking is a sign of a retained reflex – the Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR). The TLR reflex already occurs when a baby is in utero and has to do with flexion and extension of the body. In the case of the child that I mentioned, this child experienced a lot of anxiety or worry and their toe-walking was actually triggered by their emotions.
In this episode, I’ll explain more about the TLR and its importance. How we can help our kids integrate this reflex and how reflexes can reappear even if they’ve been dormant for years. I’ll also talk about the role of parents in getting a child the help they need and why you need to be willing to ask questions, share your ideas, and seek second opinions for your child when necessary. Healthcare providers need to work together because true health is composed of so many little pieces and no one knows all of the answers. Remember, it’s never too late for you to help your child!
