In this video, we discuss Voltaire's metaphor of tending to one's garden. This is the conclusion of his book "Candide". Very little information is given by Voltaire as this metaphor is a sentence long and is the final sentence of the book, so we are also going to use Karel Capek's work to expand on this metaphor.
Most automatically assume that this metaphor means to retreat from the world and worry about yourself. Although that is an element of the idea, the metaphor can be examined much deeper to understand how we are to engage with an absurd world where bad things can happen to good people. The cultivation of one's garden is the cultivation of one's character. This is where Karel Capek's work is very useful. I also mention other philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius and Aristotle, as well as a statement from the Lord Jesus Christ.
