#EricWeinstein #GeometricUnity I'll review Part 1 of my fascinating interview with mathematician & economist Eric Weinstein on the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjsPb3kBGnk
Topics include Eric's provocative new ideas on physics and science culture.
Weinstein is a vocal critic of modern academic hierarchies and advocates for advances in scientific theory over an emphasis on experimental results. Keating’s own issues with what he calls the “academic Hunger Games” leads to a lively debate about funding, academic freedom, and theoretical vs experimental physics.

00:11:09 Is there middle ground between cranks and peer review?
00:20:23 The value of Weinstein’s approach to communicating science.
00:30:50 The ethics of attribution.
00:41:26 Surviving the academic Hunger Games.

The legendary ghost particle, the Neutrino, is the unsung hero of the cosmos, setting the stage for the formation of matter and energy transport through the cosmos. In fact, there is not one, but at least 3 types, or 'flavors', of neutrinos. Physicists have calculated how many of each type of neutrino should be detected from various sources such as the sun, the earth, nuclear reactors, and the birth of the universe! But some say there should be another, so-called 'sterile' neutrino, present, both at the Big Bang, and even today.
Could these missing neutrinos be some of what makes up the 70% of the Universe that has been called dark? The dark universe includes dark energy and dark matter. We know it’s there because the measured expansion of the Universe is greater than accounted for by the known, visible matter. Flavors of neutrinos may account for all or much of dark matter.
First postulated by the legendary, acerbically humorous, Wolfgang Pauli to fix a physics energy accounting problem, Pauli lost his bet of a case of champagne that neutrinos would never be detected when, it was, in 1956, by Fred Reines and George Cowan. Waler Baade won the champagne, but Reines and Cowan shared a Nobel Prize.
Physicists are very concerned with balancing the books on energy, spin, and what we call parity. The neutrino not only assists in conserving precious parity but also has become part of the standard fundamental particles that make up the entire universe.
@FERMILAB in Batavia Illinois has been at the forefront of neutrino physics beginning in 2002 with MiniBoone, the Booster Neutrino Experiment, which used 800 tons of purified mineral oil to keep out unwanted noise.
The successor to MiniBoone is MicroBoone. Featuring new detectors, detection medium, and new results are here. In this video, I describe how MicroBoone works and what they found, and why it, like neutrinos, matters!
These latest results are an example of a time-tested tradition in science: Falsification. Disproving is as important as proving. In this case, researchers at FERMILAB have shown that the fourth flavor of Neutrinos most likely does NOT exist.
So are neutrinos super celibate? Well, they are, but not in any sense you may be used to.

#BICEP2 #Inflation #BigBang
Inflation has emerged as cosmology's touchstone theory of cosmogenesis. Yet we still do not have definitive proof that it occurred. In this discussion, I share our best evidence for inflation using existing data and where we go from here with experiments such as BICEP2 and the Simons Observatory.
It was a treat to have this interactive discussion about the Inflationary Universe with Professor Christian Ready, Lecturer and and Director of the Watson-King Planetarium in the Department of Physics, Astronomy, & Geosciences at Towson University. Chris and I discussed the Big Bang, its chief rivals, polarization of light, gravitational waves, and my book, Losing the Nobel Prize (http://amzn.to/2sa5UpA).

Is LIfe Unique to Earth or Ubiquitous in the Universe? I debated this subject with the UK's Top Chemist, Professor Lee Cronin who takes the position that life is common and even ubiquitous in the universe. Lee even suggests ways to locate and detect the presence of life and account for its information content through a serious of rubrics he and his colleagues call "assembly theory". I am less sanguine and you'll hear why.
Check out my conversation with Lee last year: "What is Life?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNAW8fZE1tk He is a prolific Scientist and public intellectual. He was born in the UK and was fascinated with science and technology from an early age getting his first computer and chemistry set when he was 8 years old. This is when he first started thinking about programming chemistry and looking for inorganic aliens. He went to the University of York where he completed both a degree and PhD in Chemistry and then on to do post docs in Edinburgh and Germany before becoming a lecturer at the Universities of Birmingham, and then Glasgow where he has been since 2002 working up the ranks to become the Regius Professor of Chemistry in 2013 aged 39. He has one of the largest multidisciplinary chemistry-based research teams in the world, having raised over $35 M in grants.
He has given over 300 international talks and has authored over 350 peer reviewed papers with recent work published in Nature, Science, and PNAS. He and his team are trying to make artificial life forms, find alien life, explore the digitization of chemistry, understand how information can be encoded into chemicals and construct chemical computers.
