Ep. 5590 - Dan McKnight on Defend the Guard and the Withdrawal From Afghanistan - 9/3/21
Scott talks with Dan McKnight about the effort to pass Defend the Guard legislation, which would block the use of National Guard troops in foreign combat operations without a declaration of war. McKnight gives background on what led him to become involved in political activism and how the absence of the Louisiana National Guard during Hurricane Ida is yet another reason for this legislation. Scott and McKnight also talk about the value veterans bring to the movement to end wars. Lastly, McKnight explains that despite being relieved the war is over, he believes the Afghanistan withdrawal was handled disgracefully.
Gareth Porter, independent historian and reporter for IPS News, discusses the build-up to the invasion of Afghanistan, why the neocons didn't care about al Qaeda, "The Getaway," why the marines had no real ability to get to Tora Bora in time to catch bin Laden, the thinking behind the neocons' Clean Break policy and pre-9/11 determination to invade Iraq, the various degrees of stupidity and nefarious planning in the administration of the Iraq occupation, and the would-be horror of a John McCain/Sarah Palin foreign policy.

Scott interviews Danny Sjursen about two prominent conflicts facing the world in 2020. In Nagorno-Karabakh, an uneasy, Russian-brokered peace deal is holding between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but Sjursen worries that this peace won’t last forever, as each country still feels that it has an unresolved claim on the disputed territory. In Ethiopia, age-old ethnic tensions have been breaking through the surface ever since the country’s government postponed elections on account of the coronavirus pandemic. The Tigrays, an ethnic minority, have long played an outsized role in the military and the government, and only in 2018 was a non-Tigray Prime Minister appointed for the first time in decades. But he has never faced popular election, and some Ethiopians fear he is trying to set himself up as an autocrat, resulting in tension all over the country, and brutal ethnic violence in some regions.

Middle east correspondent Elijah Magnier returns to the show to discuss the U.S. presence in eastern Syria. Magnier explains what the United States’ goals are, why they won’t leave without guaranteeing a political transition and how they’ve, for the time being, partitioned the country along the Euphrates river. Magnier then details how the United States is essentially acting as the undeclared protector of the Islamic State for the time being as they’ve stopped bombing the Northeastern region of the country and barred other forces from doing so. Magnier also details the history of Iranian-Syrian diplomacy and the Iranian-Hezbollah presence that has been long established in Syria. Scott then asks about the al-Nusra Front and whether the CIA’s role in aiding the so-called moderate rebels is truly over. Finally Magnier explains why the al-Qaeda in Syria is as formidable a fighting group as he’s seen in the region.
Elijah Magnier is the chief international correspondent at Al Rai and a political and terrorism/counterterrorism analyst. Find all his work at elijahjm.wordpress.com and follow him on Twitter @ejmalrai.

John Glaser, a writer for Antiwar.com and The Huffington Post, discusses how US obsession with regime change is ruining any chance for a deal on Iran’s nuclear program; how US foreign policy became completely disconnected from the national interest; learning from Libya, Iraq and N. Korea that nuclear weapons are indeed deterrents to invasion/regime change; and why Obama needed a terrorism waiver to arm Syrian rebels.
