Tokyo Kanda Yushima Seido - 湯島聖堂 Located a short walking distance from the famous Kanda Myojin Shrine, Yushima Seido is a shrine dedicated to Confucius, the well known and respected Chinese scholar. Confucianism was very popular in Japan during the latter part of the Edo period (1603 ~ 1867) and Yushima Seido used to be part of Confucian school during the same period.
With its rather simple or spartan design, Yushima Seido is a good example of Confucian architecture during this period and comes with the striking feature of being covered in Japanese black urushi (lacquer). This emphasizes the desire to embody the simple, yet delicate philosophy of Confucianism.
Kominka are Japanese traditional folk houses. Usually made of wood, clay, straw, and bamboo, Kominka were as spartan as you can imagine yet many survive in the Japanese countryside. While they have always been the center of interest of those Japanese people keen on reliving the past, many of these Kominka have been turned into ryokan or guest houses. A new wave of Kominka has been booming in Japan for the past several years: The Luxury Kominka.
These new Luxury Kominka are simply 5-star hotels crammed into these old houses. With flat-screen TVs, perfect kitchens, huge bathrooms within and out baths, AC pretty much everywhere, BBQ set, and sometimes like here, a pool. Simply put, think of them as the Japanese version of the French concept of "Relais & Chateaux" where old meets new and luxurious.
Granted, these luxury Kominka are far from cheap, but not being able to travel outside of Japan recently has made them quite popular for people that are looking to enjoy the countryside in the best possible way.

One of Japan’s most famous temples, Kinkakuji (Kinkaku-ji) or in English the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s most popular attractions and is a world-renowned tourist location. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was actually the retirement house of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will, it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408.
Kinkakuji was built to replicate the lavish Kyoto Kitayama culture that developed during Ashikaga Yoshimitsu’s times. Each floor represents a different style of architecture. With the first floor built in the Shinden Style (Heian Period), and where the second floor is built in the Bukke style (Samurai residence) with its exterior completely covered in gold leaf and finally the third floor, also covered in gold, is built has a Chinese Zen Hall capped with a golden phoenix.

Note: This video is a "none-cinematic" version, without the cinematic black bars, of a previously uploaded video available here:re: https://videos.tokyostreetview.com/Okunoin-Cemetery-Part-I-Wakayama
Part I : The Path
Time : 6h30 a.m.
Okunoin Cemetery, located in Koyasan, is a most astonishing cemetery. Founded in 805 by Kobo Daishi, one of Japan’s most important religious figures. Koysan is the center of the Shingo Buddhist sect. Kobo Daishi mausoleum is at the center of Okunoin Cemetery.
With over 200,000 tombstones located pretty much everywhere along the approach to the mausoleum, the Okunoin cemetery comes straight out of one of those Japanese ghost stories with neglected moss-covered tombstones standing immune to the passing of time. Magically the cemetery is at its best early in the morning or during a misty day where, if you are lucky enough, you will have the chance to hear the trees cracking under the pressure of the wind.

Note: remastered version of our original 2014 Japanese Snow Monkeys of Jigokudani - 地獄谷野猿公苑 - 4K Ultra HD Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPxrseYWfds
Jigokudani Yaen-koen, known for its many onsen (hot spring baths), is located in the Yokoyu valley of Nagano prefecture. Like the humans that come to bathe, there is a large population of Japanese Macaques (“snow monkeys”) that also bathe in the hot springs.
First opened in 1964, Jigokudani Yaen-koen and more precisely Jigokudani Onsen Korakukan ryokan (a Japanese traditional Hotel) continues to be a popular place to enjoy the onsen, as well as watching the snow monkeys in their natural habitat.
Should you plan to visit Jigokudani Yaen-koen and its snow monkeys, be sure to visit during the winter. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to hike through the forest to get there, so be prepared. It is worth the “trip.”
An extended version of this video is in the work and will soon be available.

Today’s video marks the beginning of a new series of content about Japan where we will bring you along with us when we are walking around Tokyo and other areas. Unlike other videos we used to upload in the past, and that we will continue to upload in the future, these new “Everyday slice of Japanese Life” videos have no real goal but to share with you some moment of Japanese people’s lives throughout the year. We hope you will enjoy this new series of videos and please do not hesitate to leave your comments and reactions below.
Note : Shooting such videos with our usual gear is a bit tricky and we decided to opt for a more compact and easy-to-handle solution using a GoPro. As such the quality of these videos may not be as good as the ones we used to upload. Thank you for your understanding.

Hyakusaiji Temple is the oldest temple in Shiga. It was erected in 606 in what used to be the town of Omi. Omi merged into the expanded city of Maibara in 2005. Portuguese missionary Luís Fróis called Hyakusiji, “Heaven on Earth” when he visited Japan in 1563.
Founded by Prince Shotoku, more than 1400 years ago, Hyakusaiji temple was created at the mid-point between it and of Mt. Oshitate (771.8 m) for the sake of visitors from the Korean kingdom of Baekje. The prince drew inspiration from a temple in that nation that was called Ryu’un-ji in Japanese.
Belonging to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, Hyakusaiji Temple is part of the three famous Koto Sanzan temples which also includes Saimyoji and Kongorinji.
