America was the pioneer for democracy, and remains one of its foremost champions worldwide. Plus, it is the great nation that sent men to the moon and has a rover doing extraordinary things on Mars. So how come it seems completely incapable of coming up with a system of voting that its citizens accept as robust and fair? I mean – seriously – how hard can it be? Well, let’s have a look.
The Mallen Baker Show is aimed at all people who see themselves as change makers, with commentary on issues and change movements with a particular focus on climate change and environment, social issues, free speech and corporate social responsibility.
There are four countries in particular that are sufficiently low-lying to be already experiencing difficult challenges from rising sea levels. They are the Maldives, the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Kiribati. There’s a certain amount of simplified nonsense that gets talked on the subject, and there are some interesting dilemmas and grey areas. Let's have a look.

Several questions from Patreon supporters about what a prime minister Keir Starmer would be likely to be like - moderate, or extreme? Centre ground, or captured by the left, or the woke? In my answer, I talk about how a lot of the answer will depend on the complex maths that comes out of the final election result.

In this news round-up of the week for 30th December 2022, as Covid rages across China, some countries bring in restrictions on travellers blaming the fear of new variants. Russian oligarchs continue to die by sudden falling out of hotel windows syndrome. A controversial leading light of the manosphere Andrew Tate picks a fight with Greta Thunberg and ends up sad. And in this week’s short thought, one more thing about those new year resolutions.

In his recent video, Roger Hallam, co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, tells young people that they face annihilation, and this means they should join him in getting arrested in an attempt to bring down the government. Does this constitute sound advice for young people? Do actual climate scientists agree that his version of the science is really correct? Is there some alternative advice they might want to consider?

One of the burning questions we’re asking ourselves
right now concerns our diet.
Should we eat meat?
Let’s discuss.
This video owes a huge amount to Vaclav Smil’s book of the same name.
Much of the information I cover here was gathered together in his book
which, if you have a deeper interest in this topic, I recommend.
See link below.

Elections in Taiwan, India, Europe, the UK and the United States. It's going to be a year for potentially big changes that will echo down through the next decades and beyond. And it could just be that several of them turn out to be real powder keg moments. Let's have a look.
