Leonid Sabanayev - 4 Preludes, Op. 1
4 Preludes, written by the biographer, mathematician, and composer Leonid Leonidovich Sabaneyev, demonstrates a ferociously skilled grasp at technique and emotion. Sabaneyev, the son of an explorer, became close friends with Scriabin. In doing so, his own works orbited that of his friend, and he became a source from whom much of what posterity knows of Scriabin draws.
The set of pieces are, interestingly, in a minor key, and all are dark, gloomy, brooding, and most importantly, beautiful. Each ends in a unique way: the first Prelude takes off and flies into eternity, the second erupts into a destructive rage, the third is vaporized in a blinding flash, and the last simply collapses. And dies.
