On a Saturday morning in Zimbabwe, Southern Africa, Paul Templer’s day started with a sense of foreboding. A close friend of his who was supposed to be leading a canoe safari had come down with malaria, and Templer was the man assigned to be his replacement as the lead guide. Templer recalled having a feeling of trepidation that day—like something was just not quite right. But as they paddled around the pod, one of the canoes had fallen back and was heading toward deeper waters. Suddenly, there was a loud thud amid crashing water as a hippo hit the back of the canoe of one of the guides...

On an August afternoon, towards the end of the South African winter in 2019, a 70-year-old Van Biljon entered the enclosure of the lions he called “his children.” He had grown used to being inside the enclosure with them, feeling confident in the bond they had formed over the thirteen years the lions had been at the lodge under his care. On that fateful day, Van Biljon turned his back to mend a fence that was broken when one of the lions pounced on his back, digging its claws into his shoulders and piercing its teeth into the back of his neck.

On the 19th of march, Dr. Richard and his wife, along with a friend and colleague of his, Dr. Harvey Friedman, were planning on taking a guided safari through Tuli Nature Reserve as a way to relax and have fun after all the hard work they had done. By this point, they were about halfway through their
2-month stay in the country, and they decided to take the day off and have some fun. The particular tour they were taking goes through a section of the Limpopo River, on the southernmost part of the reserve. The wildlife in reserve is very diverse, being home to giraffes, lions, cheetahs, and waterbucks to name a few. So it’s not a surprise that it’s one of the most popular tourist locations in the country. This section of the river is one of the only crocodile-free stretches in Botswana, and there had never been a crocodile attack in the area.
However, unknown to the group, that was about to change, and in succession, the lives of many more people.
This is the horrifying true story of Dr. Richard K. Root’s fatal encounter with one of the world’s most feared predators
