Explores and critiques the so-called decentering of the subject in French phenomenology. This incisive work examines questions of ontotheology and their relation to the so-called theological turn of recent French phenomenology. Joeri Schrijvers explores and critiques the decentering of the subject attempted by Jean-Luc Marion, Jean-Yves Lacoste, and Emmanuel Levinas, three philosophers who, inspired by their readings of Heidegger, attempt to overturn the active and autonomous subject. In his consideration of each thinker, Schrijvers shows that a simple reversal of the subject-object distinction has been achieved, but no true decentering of the subject. For Lacoste, the subject becomes Gods intention for Marion, the subject becomes the object and objective of givenness and for Levinas, the subject is without secrets, like an object, before a greater Other. Critiquing the axioms and assumptions of contemporary philosophy, Schrijvers argues that there is no overcoming ontotheology. He ultimately proposes a more phenomenological and existential approach, a presencing of the invisible, to address the concerns of ontotheology. This book is well-researched and well argued highly recommended. Comparative and Continental Philosophy Schrijvers is very thorough in his elaboration of his philosophical sparring partners The book can serve as a critical introduction to the thoughts of Levinas, Marion and Lacoste in particular and French philosophy of religion in general. Modern Theology [an] impressive work. Religious Studies Review Joeri Schrijvers is a Postdoctoral Researcher of the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO), Faculty of Theology, at Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. He is coeditor (with Lieven Boeve, Wessel Stoker, and Hendrik M. Vroom) of Faith in the Enlightenment? The Critique of the Enlightenment Revisited. **Review Schrijvers is very thorough in his elaboration of his philosophical sparring partners The book can serve as a critical introduction to the thoughts of Levinas, Marion and Lacoste in particular and French philosophy of religion in general. A gripping tale of exploration aboard H.M.S. Challenger , an expedition that laid the foundations for modern oceanography From late 1872 to 1876, H.M.S. Challenger explored the worlds oceans. Conducting deep sea soundings, dredging the ocean floor, recording temperatures, observing weather, and collecting biological samples, the expedition laid the foundations for modern oceanography. Following the ships naturalists and their discoveries, earth scientist Doug Macdougall engagingly tells a story of Victorian-era adventure and ties these early explorations to the growth of modern scientific fields. In this lively story of discovery, hardship, and humor, Macdougall examines the work of the expeditions scientists, especially the naturalist Henry Moseley, who rigorously categorized the flora and fauna of the islands the ship visited, and the legacy of John Murray, considered the father of modern oceanography. Macdougall explores not just the expedition itself but also the iconic place that H.M.S. Challenger has achieved in the annals of ocean exploration and science.

The poems in Tsitsi Ella Jajis Beating the Graves meditate on the meaning of living in diaspora, an experience increasingly common among contemporary Zimbabweans. Vivid evocations of the landscape of Zimbabwe filter critiques of contemporary political conditions and ecological challenges, veiled in the multiple meanings of poetic metaphor. Many poems explore the genre of praise poetry, whichin Shona cultureis a form of social currency for greeting elders and peers with a recitation of the characteristics of ones clan. Others reflect on how diasporic life shapes family relations. The praise songs in this volume pay particular homage to the powerful women and gender-queer ancestors of the poetslineage and thought. Honoring influences ranging from Caribbean literature to classical music and engaging metaphors from rural Zimbabwe to the post-steel economy of Youngstown, Ohio, Jaji articulates her own ars poetica. These words revel in the utter ordinariness of living globally, of writing in the presence of all the languages of the world, at home everywhere, and never at rest.

Applying critical sociological theory, this book explores the shortcomings of popular tactics in animal liberation efforts. Building a case for a scientifically-grounded grassroots approach, it is argued that professionalized advocacy that works in the service of theistic, capitalist, patriarchal institutions will find difficulty achieving success.

This is the first comprehensive and interpretative account of the history of economic growth and change in colonial and post-colonial India. Dr. Tomlinson draws together and expands on the specialist literature dealing with imperialism, development and underdevelopment, the historical processes of change in agriculture, trade and manufacture, and the relations among business, the economy and the state. What emerges is a picture of an economy in which some output growth and technical change occurred both before and after 1947, but in which a broadly based process of development has been constrained by structural and market imperfections. Tomlinson argues that India has thus had an underdeveloped economy, with weak market structures and underdeveloped institutions, which has since 1860 profoundly influenced the social, political and ecological history of South Asia.ReviewTomlinsons extremely competent book lays out the main strands of this new work (to which he has made his own significant contributions) and draws them together into a relatively coherent whole that is remarkably lucid and satisfyingly undoctrinaire. Morris David Morris, Economic Development and Cultural Change...a book of interest not only to South Asianists but also, as Tomlinson points out, to anyone interested in a case study of the difficulties of achieving economic growth and the terrible penalties of misdirected economic policies....Tomlinson provides the reader with a sobering perspective. Blair B. Kling, American Historical Review...Tomlinsons arguments...are always engaging...Tomlinson skillfully demonstrates the impact on India of periodic fluctuations in the world capitalist economy from 1824 to 1945 and believes these events largely determined the shape of modern India...required reading for any serious student of Indias economy and Indias place in development theory. Marc Jason Gilbert, Journal of Developing Areas Book DescriptionIn this book, Dr. B. R. Tomlinson presents the first comprehensive and interpretative account of the history of economic growth and change in colonial and postcolonial India. He draws together and expands upon the specialist literature dealing with imperialism, development and underdevelopment, and the historical processes of change in agriculture, trade and manufacture, the relations among business, the economy and the state, including the process of planning after Independence and the coming of the green revolution.

The Roman province of Noricum occupied most of Austria as well as parts of Italy, Germany and the Balkans. Noricum, first published in 1974, presents a comprehensive history of Noricum, from 400 BC to the end of Roman rule in AD 600. Professor Alfoldys account is predicated on the methodical interpretation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources, and emphasises the problems of demography and socio-economic history. The chapters are arranged chronologically, ensuring a sense of the continuity of historical events and illuminating the history and archaeology of Noricum both before it came into contact with the Romans as well as under Roman rule. ul l*l ul Noricum includes a review of much recent research on the province, detailed references to the source material, a comprehensive bibliography and valuable appendices. It is a substantial work of ancient history and archaeology and will interest both the specialist and the general reader. **Language Notes Text English, German (translation)
