From https://www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pages/bond-concrete.html - Preparing old concrete for bonding new concrete is very important. If you fail to do this step correctly the concrete bond will surely fail. It is not simply enough for the concrete to be clean, it needs to be clean and free from grease, grit, sand, calcium, portland cement or any other impurities. Even this is not enough according to many professional concrete workers who might suggest to tak an extra step to alter the surface profile of the conctete for enhanced purchase due to the physical shape. This is called concrete scarifying or concrete dimpling.

From http://www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pages/pool-package.html - Learn about choosing stamped concrete for your swimming pool deck. Stamped concrete looks great but there are safety concerns that are not there if choosing a broomed concrete finish instead. Even using aggressive stamp patterns and adding silica sand or Shark Grip to the concrete sealer, the deck will still be very slippery when wet. Choosing a dark or bold colored stamped concrete gets really hot in the sun and is not comfortable to walk on. Broomed concrete gives more traction for those wet feet when walking (realistically running) around the pool deck. It stays cooler if uncolored and is also a cheaper concrete finish than a colored stamped concrete. Broomed concrete is an extremely low maintenance swimming pool deck surface. Stamped concrete is a much higher maintenance deck surface requiring sealer to be reapplied regularly.

From https://www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pages/pool-blog.html learn about swimming pool automation systems and why automatic adjustment of your swimming pool chemistry is not really an option yet even though the technology does exist to allow you to do this. Calibration issues with automation equipment combined with an increase in manual checks and intervention for calibration of equipment, double testing water chemistry, maintaining chlorine and acid tanks, stenner pumps and hoses...in total it would take less time to just manually adjust the pH and sanitizer (chlorine) in your pool by hand than it does to double check a full automation installation.

From https://www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pages/pool-plan.html many people who are hiring a new pool installer will fail to ask for references, or not ask for enough references, which is definitely a mistake when it comes to swimming pools. References for similar projects is one of the only ways to verify that the pool builder can deliver what you are requesting that they build for you. The best method to ask for references from a pool builder is to ask for 10 references of which you will contact three. This makes it harder for the builder to hand select only three good clients for you to contact. Now they have to select 10 and not all of them will be their "best" references which increases your odds of getting good, useful information from these references about your pool builder.

From https://www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pages/question4.html - If you are going to install your own swimming pool, it might be a good idea to consider a vinyl liner pool. Vinyl liner swimming pools might have somewhat of a poor reputation depending on where you are located geographically but in some areas, like cold climate areas in the northeast for example, vinyl liners are king. By this what I mean is vinyl liners outnumber any other kind of swimming pool at minimum 10 to 1 and in some areas 100 to 1. The advantage of a vinyl liner pool for a self-build is that there are not as many technical processes involved with the installation which will require you to sub-contract or bring in outside help. Some aspects of making a concrete pool, for example, is simply too much for the average do-it-yourself enthusiast and you need specialists - concrete specialists, tile specialists, etcetera. With a self-built vinyl liner swimming pool you have the highest chances for success and the least amount of stages that simply require that you bring in outside help. In fact, if you choose a smart design that lends itself well to being able to be self-installed (rectangular, no ledges, no vinyl-over-steel features, etc.) that would be the best for a do-it-yourself project because you are choosing a technical process that has a high likelihood of success.
