Get ready to have your world turned upside down, folks. The ultimate secret has been revealed: bears aren't the lazy winter sloths you thought they were. Nope, they don't just tuck themselves into a cozy cave and hit the snooze button for three months. That's right, those furry creatures only enter a state where they half-heartedly doze off and can't be bothered to munch on too much. And get this - even in the wild, they're not completely knocked out like a college student after an all-nighter. And don't even get us started on the bears in captivity. Let's just say they won't be winning any awards for productivity during the winter. Don't believe us? Just look at Leo and Randy, who are basically professional nappers at this point.

So we gave up on the horrible tin cookies that no one wanted, and moved to raisins. A whole bunch of you sent us raisins in the past few months - thank you!!! - and they were a MUCH bigger hit with Leo! Happy Birthday Leo!

Recently, we’ve been discussing the differences in how the bears “play fight” with each other as compared to how gentle they are when playing with Jim or Susan. Here is a good example of the larger bears at play. This is Rosie, a female Kodiak brown bear, and Randy, a male Syrian brown bear (he has the white hair around his neck area as do all Syrian bears) playing by the pond. Watch until the end where you will see them give each other some really incredible swipes. A swipe that that could take a human’s head off, but it barely phases the other bear. You’ve never seen the bears swipe like that, with that sort of strength, at Susan or Jim. They are very well aware of the differences and they are careful not to hurt them.

American Snippets came to interview us today and Sonya seemed summarily unimpressed...frolicking in the pond while Jim spoke with the interviewer. Watch for their satori on us in the next two weeks!

If you follow us on Facebook you know that we got in a very seriously injured baby bear cub. Here is his first attempt at eating solid food since his accident.
---------------------
Yesterday our Little Bear progressed to eating some solid food! He kept his eyes open much more throughout the day and tried to stand and move around much more often. He currently can not stand on his own, but that is to be expected at this point.
These are all great signs....but obviously he is far from out of the woods. Here is a video of him eating a little bit of peach. His first solid food since the accident. Keep in mind that he is far from out of the woods...all of these things give us great hope, but I want everyone to understand that it is still extremely possible that we will lose him and still possible that he may be brain damaged or crippled.
So please keep him in your thoughts, please keep those prayers coming and please, please, PLEASE consider a donation. We have decided to move along as if he WILL survive and we need to prepare and build a better enclosure for him. He needs to be in a smaller space (if he starts to improve more) than our current cub enclosure, and he needs to be in a bigger space than he is now during convalescence. Please please consider a donation. You can click the donation button on our website orphanedwildlife.org and I will also set up a GoFundMe later today. THANK YOU!
Due to the crazy (and many rude and foul-mouthed) comments that are being posted here, we haver disabled comments for our channel. We have a VERY active Facebook page and we invite you to visit and share comments with us there. Also visit us on the web at orphanedwildlife.org

Susan and Jim often give the bears toys to play with that make them think and use their paws and claws to get a treat. Watch how Amy spins it to get out a peanut, or a marshmallow, or a piece of chicken jerky. She’s a pro!

Most of you know about Duckie, our very elderly Muscovy duck. You know how he is the only duck survivor because every night he leaves the pond and comes ALL the way up to the barn RIGHT BEFORE Susan closes up for the night - and he sleeps safely inside. No other ducks ever come with him and ultimately they all have been the victim of predators. But Duckie was lonely for his own kind and so he started walking all the way down our driveway, across the street, and down the block to the neighbors pond to hang with the Muscovy ducks there, and then coming ALL the way back every night. Well eventually he stopped coming back at night, and just stayed there....and our neighbor called us one morning to tell us that Duckie was injured. Susan rushed over there to find his back end all bloodied. She scooped him up and took him to the barn and treated his injuries. He survived but Susan didn’t want him going there anymore. And so she got two more Muscovy ducks and she penned them in the barn for a few weeks for them to get accustomed to one another and consider that their safe place/home. And so Duckie is so happy and they are content to wander about with him, coming back to the barn as well. Let’s hope it stays that way! We will name today’s series “As the Ducks Turn. These are the Days of Our Lives”.
Susan says: Rare footage of Duckie and his new buddies actually spending time outside. I always thought ducks lived near ponds. Didn’t you? Well, these three are indoor ducks. They want nothing to do with the many ponds that we have. It was bad enough when I had one duck pooping all over the barn. Now I have three of them doing it. When I got the new ones I was planning on not really having to do much with them. Just feed them here and there. Well, they have other ideas. They want to be served and cared for and catered to. Apparently Duckie told them many tales of his long life here at the sanctuary, and they have decided it sounds pretty good. :)

While Jim continues to use Leo as his walker, instead of a cane or an ACTUAL walker post knee surgery I thought we could also answer your question of “what does Toaster think of the bears”? The answer is really that to Toaster, having bears around is just normal. You can see her here, on the other side of the fence. So bears are just “normal” for Jim and Susan and Toaster, while we just watch with our mouths open in shock.
