Happy Chinese (快乐汉语) Ep 001 - "Visitor from Afar" (远方来客)
On New Year's Eve, Mai Miao has told her uncle's family (the Li family) that she is going to bring a classmate from a "far away" home for Chinese New Year. While the young Lele is pestering Xiaowei to set off firecrackers, they meet an American lady who asks for directions. Xiaowei enthusiastically helps her out, but he points her in the wrong direction. This "American lady" turns out to be Mai Miao's classmate, Susan! By the end of the episode, though, Susan finally manages to find the hospitable Li family and spends a happy New Year's Eve with them.

In return for everyone's care for her, Susan (Maria Panait) offers to cook some of the most authentic American food for everyone. But Susan makes hamburgers for three meals a day, which makes everyone tired. Susan decides to give everyone a change. With the help of Mai Miao, Susan successfully makes Chinese Hamburger (ròujiāmó) that combines Chinese and Western styles.

In this episode, Father Li (played by Zhang Shaorong) attaches great importance to the arrival of American student Susan (played by Maria Panait), and he orders the whole Li family to receive Susan according to the full standards of diplomatic formality. Xiaoyong (played by Xu Xiaoxing) comes to the Lis' house to pay them a New Year's greeting, but Susan and Mai Miao (played by Wu Xiaodan) play a small prank on him. Still, after meeting Susan, Xiaoyong invites everyone to his restaurant for a welcome banquet in Susan's honor. There, Susan learns a lot of New Year's greetings, but she keeps toasting Father Li, who soon ends up intoxicated. The next day, Father Li is shocked to learn from the family about his own drunken behavior. He is then further humiliated when Susan returns drunk from a night on the town and she sings and dances in imitation of Father Li's earlier drunkenness.

Madam Wu, a friend of Mother Li, decides to introduce her niece to Xiaowei to be his girlfriend, but Xiaowei doesn't want to go on a blind date and is very distressed. Susan and Mai Miao decide to help him. At the date, Xiaowei can see that the niece is actually quite pretty. But when Susan rushes in pretending to be Xiaowei's fiancée in order to rescue him, the date is spoiled.

Susan finally gets up "early" (早), but finds that Father Li and Xiaowei have gotten up earlier than her. In the morning market, Susan finds a lot of signs that say "breakfast" (早点) and she asks to keep one of them. Father Li sees the "breakfast" sign on the back of Susan's bicycle, and thinks that Susan is going to work and study to open a breakfast shop. He and Mother Li prepare for Susan a large table of Chinese and Western breakfast foods, and they plan to give her some ideas.

Xiaoyong's restaurant has a new roast duck, and he invites Susan (Maria Panait) to try it. Susan takes Father Li (played by Zhang Shaorong) and Mother Li to try the food. Father and Mother Li are happy to accept the invitation, but find out that Susan's American custom is for each diner to pay their own way. When Susan finds this out, she takes Father and Mother Li out to have a meal again, but this time she applies the Chinese custom of paying for everyone she invited.

Sascha is recovering from a breakup when she receives mail notifying her that her old American pen pal from grade school, Sam Scott (played by Lawrence Ray), intends to pay her a visit. Their neighbor, Nic Müller (played by Frank Brunet) is immediately jealous, as he has something of a crush on Sascha. Hilarity ensues when the naïve Sam turns out to be socially awkward, but as it turns out, this is because Sam is harboring a secret...
