Busting the Spotted Grunter on the 1st bank Umzimkulu Estuary
I have captured many spotted grunter on camera thus far, but never in this flash hunting mode - right on the first bank as the high tide moves into the Umzimkulu Estuary.
Dirty Prawn dude, Dave Phillips taught me to always start at the first bank. And then work back into the estuary as the tide fills in. Well! It's an excellent strategy and it worked peach for me as the movie will show you.
I bust the grunter in hunting formation and waiting in ambush - for any hapless prawn or fry to be washed over that first bank.
The little movie has turned into a promotional item for the cameras which I use - GoFish cams. They are compact and streamlined units that can be deployed in a thousand ways. Including straight in front of your lure or bait as you troll. Or even cast (tricky but it works). In Mozambique, we actually pinned a hook on the camera and worked it like a lure - amazing stuff!
Getting your bait out a distance from the shore really seems to help. Some amazing catches are reported by anglers using high-tech drones to outcast all their mates. Is it fair? Oh well...check these ous out...
Pomene Point, Mozambique, early morning in Jan 2020. The usual morning of casting until it's sore. Catching kingfish after kingfish from the rocks. So much fun in the sun!
Then came the tribe. Not sure exactly where from - but they had a plan! Instead of drones, this hunter/gatherer bunch recruited the kayak anglers from the beach. To paddle their baits out - 200 or 300 metres!
And man was there action upon those rocks this beautiful morning. Not many fish were landed but very many were hooked. Sharks. Couta. Bonefish. Kingfish...and this lovely springer that came to the gaff for a local dude - the size of which is extremely impressive no matter where you were fishing.
So yes, getting your bait further out than your mate certainly seems to help your catch statistics.
BUT.
You don't need R20 000 to do it with! Just paddle a kayak out there!

23 May 2023 Sardine Report - first shoal pulverised?
Kevin at Qhora Mouth near Mazeppa checks in with his always interesting and informative observations. Kevin logged some more interesting sightings over the last 48 hours. Including reports of gazillions of gannets heading south back past him last evening (21st May 2023).
It seems they have been gorging themselves on that first rather large shoal. Along with sharks, gamefish and cetaceans of all sorts including the dolphin gang. Who are making the most of their patient wait for this very moment.
If any remnants of this first shoal get past these marauding predators, it will be surprising. But those gannets heading south again like that only mean one thing...
Our online surveys where the public is encouraged to participate, have validated the whereabouts of this first shoal. Won't be long until we get more pics and vids to add to this years collection.

(0:01) Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson, Wednesday the 22nd of May. (0:06) NSRI National Safety Alert. (0:09) NSRI in cooperation with police, maritime authorities, (0:13) disaster risk management and the emergency services (0:15) are appealing to boaters, sailors, paddlers, bathers, anglers and coastal hikers (0:21) to be aware of a South African Weather Service's warning (0:25) alerting to rough sea conditions and big waves (0:27) along the West Coast coastline, Western Cape coastline, (0:32) South Cape coastline and potentially extending beyond (0:35) for the next few days and into the coming weekend.
(0:38) We are appealing to public and to the maritime community (0:41) to follow South African Weather Service's weather alerts. (0:45) The South African Weather Service's forecast rough sea conditions (0:48) may also be affected by the full moon spring tide (0:51) that peaks on Thursday the 23rd of May, (0:54) bringing the normal daily two high tides and normal daily two low tides (0:58) to be higher than normal at high tide and to be lower than normal at low tide. (1:04) Spring tide may cause stronger than normal rip currents (1:07) and areas that are not normally affected by waves at high tide (1:10) may be engulfed by waves during the spring high tide.
(1:15) Caution is advised and we appeal to public members (1:18) and to the maritime community to have safety top of mind. (1:22) Anglers should note high tide times (1:25) and stay clear from the shoreline during the two daily high tides. (1:30) Anglers should avoid crossing to islands along the coastline (1:33) during the low tide to fish (1:35) as these islands can be cut off from mainland during high tide.
(1:40) Coastal hikers should not try to cross at river miles (1:43) where currents can be particularly strong during the outgoing tide (1:46) and do not try to cross through hiking trails (1:49) that are close to the shoreline during high tide (1:52) where spring high tide can cut off shoreline hiking trails. (1:57) Boaters, sailors and paddlers should wear their life jackets (2:00) while their craft and or their vessels are underway (2:03) and to wear life jackets during rough sea conditions. (2:07) Always have safety equipment at the ready.
(2:11) For enhanced safety, download and use the NSRI's free SafeTracks smartphone application. (2:17) We emphasize the importance of safety during these conditions. (2:21) Exercise caution and prioritize your safety and the safety of those around you.
(2:28) Let's keep each other safe.

Mdumbi and Beyond Brucifire Surf Report 12 May 2021
Brucifire! Is taking this project very seriously and if you check the dates, all of this happened over the last one single week. A week in the life of Brucifire included a sojourn to the Wild Coast.
Mdumbi is deep Transkei and it's a massive heave from Jbay (or anywhere for that matter). Things always happen on these trips. And this was no exception as the Benz (Brucifire's preferred car), suffered too much abuse and gave up right at the start!
The adventure unfolds just as you would expect it to, eventually arriving at their destination in the twilight zone. Where the crew seemed to stay for quite some time. Only surfacing for a surf or two and some candid moments teasing the locals about their undersized wares. It should be noted however that the Poensie starring in a major role - was size. These fish are legal at 50mm. And although not encouraged, there is not much else you can do once it's dead, but eat it!
Mdumbi Backpackers at mdumbi.co.za put up the show and put up with the crew too. Scaring the physio girls is one of Brucifire's favourite flat-day-fun things to do.
But ok, one thing was for sure, the waves back in JBay were calling. Had our surfers stayed a little longer, in the twilight of the Transkei, they might have seem Mdumbi do it's JBay impersonation. But at the crack of dawn on Monday, the caravan left town.
And headed for Dodge.
Where the waves were actually cooking for some!
"We only surf StupidTubes when we can stand in the barrel!" - Brucifire 11 May 2021.
The waves have also come to the KZN coast and many yarns can be heard in the usual carparks.
