This weekend #SalmonRushdie was stabbed in the neck by a religious maniac so in this weeks #tarot show we ask which is the best #religion anyway? And for once we get a clear answer. ### Significator 1 - 5 Of Cups, Disappoint The significator cards tell us which religions are on the board here. Which which religion is the first significator, the 5 of cups? Religions that are filled with _anguish_ and emphasise the _betrayal_ of mankind towards god. Religions like Catholicism, or Judaism. They fill their followers with _desperation_ and _despondency_, they know they have _disappointed_ god, so live a life of _remorse_ and _regret_, _Sorrow_ and _stagnation_. ### Significator 2 - 2 Of Trumps, Priestess Here we have the religions that have _consciousness_ and _enlightenment_ at their core. Buddhism, meditation, _tarot_, the _esoteric_ religions of the east that emphasise _spirituality_ and the _occult_. ### Significator 3 - 12 Of Trumps, Hanged Man The 12 of Trumps represents religions that demand _capitulation_, _surrender_, _submission_, those with a god that demands we _forgo_ pleasures and _relinquish_ or _renounce_ our own selves for the group and the divine. Those who would hang apostates. Islam, perhaps, or the Christianity of the Crusades. ### Significator 4 - 8 Of Pentacles, Prudence The final card is the 8 of Pentacles, so we are signalling a religion concentrating on _prudence_, on _argument_ over violence, on _education_ and _maths_ and _learning_, those that are more _rational_ and _reasoning_. Protestantism, or Humanism, or Atheism. ### Appraisal 1 - 6 Of Trumps, Lovers So what of the guilt religions? They have their obvious downsides: The guilt and disappointment and dejection and despair. But since people bond under stress, and disaster brings out community. So paradoxically the guilt religions can lead to an _affection_ for god and a sense of _companionship_ and _camaraderie_ in the group. It can increase _faith_ and _harmony_ and _gratitude_ to be a part of a group that knows they have offended God and must suffer his wrath. ### Appraisal 2 - 14 Of Trumps, Temperance The more spiritual and enlightened religions lead to _community_, _civility_, to _compassion_ for others based on _justice_ and _kindness_ and _love_. To meditate and understand the oneness of all things breeds a _restraint_ and _patience_ that leads to _peace_ and _tranquillity_. ### Appraisal 3 - 9 Of Swords, Cruelty What of the violent campaigning religions? Their followers turn _cruel_, they copy the violence of their god and _attack_ and _assault_ others, like _barbarians_. Their societies can be _brutal_ and full of _cruelty_ and _injustice_. They _suffer_ and inflict _terror_ because of the _savagery_ and _slaughter_ their god demands and permits. ### Appraisal 4 - 8 Of Cups, Indolence Where does the logic and prudence of the protestant and atheist religions lead? _Indolence_. Without any god people can become _alienated_ from their fellow man. They may become _callous_ and _complacent_, _disheartened_ and _gloomy_ and _wistful_. Godlessness leads to _hopelessness_, it can be literally _dispiriting_. ### Best - 4 Of Swords, Truce So what is the best religion? The best religion is a _truce_, an _armistice_ between all the religions, and _agreement_ to live and let live, to have an _ceasefire_ and allow people to choose their own religions, to let the _outgroup_ do as they will, and _pause_ any hostility. The best religion is a _stalemate_, an acceptance that at best, almost all religions are made up so we should learn to live with our fellow man. ### Summary The guilt religions may increase _love_, but they fill people with _anguish_ and _despondency_ too. This week the world's government's ended their meeting at #cop26 and agreed on a statement. Did it go far enough? Or was it just a #copout? We did a five minute #tarot reading to find out. ### Past - 4 Wands, Completion In the distant past, humanity lived in stability, balance and equilibrium with nature. ### Present - 7 Trumps, Chariot Until the age of the motor arrived, the industrial age. Power and infrastructure and transit and engines. ### Future - 4 Swords, Truce There was a stalemate. Humanity was helpless and passive as the engines and the power and the burning of the fuel continued. ### Intervention - 14 Trumps, Temperance But then the intervention: Cop26. Here to give temperance. To encourage teamwork, and living in harmony with nature, justice as it's goal. ### Influences - 12 Swords, Knight Sadly, the leaders we elect and send to these things (if they even go) are the Knight of Swords type: Thoughtless, self-assured, exuberant but discursive. Hurried and ill advised. Does that describe your leader? Even if not it describes the others. ### Obstacles - 9 Cups, Happiness The people love their fuel of course, it brings the happiness and wealth and plentiful comforts. This is an obstacle to COP being able to do anything, especially with us sending leaders who will pander to that. ### Outcome - 6 Cups, Pleasure So the outcome will be the pleasure will continue. The industrial age will continue.
