Skull Fragments Indicate Sapiens Reached Europe 210,000 Years Ago
The discovery of a skull in the Apidima Cave of southern Greece has been classified as belonging to homo Sapiens, and may prove that our species spread into Europe far earlier than previously thought. The Jindo takes a look at the details of the find itself, its historical and anthropological context, the methods of dating the fossils themselves, and what this breakthrough discovery means for the state of paleoanthropology moving forward.
Researchers from North American, European and African institutions analyzed ancient DNA from 41 human skeletons, providing answers to previously unsolved questions about life in sub-Saharan Africa thousands of years ago. The Jindo takes a look at the Great Rift Valley region, it's known history, and the context in which genetic data reveals the movements of herders, farmers and the extent of their interactions with the local hunter gatherers within the past 6,000 years.

Using cutting-edge excavation and laser-mapping techniques underneath Rome's St. John Lateran Basilica, British archaeologists have discovered an older cathedral, a large barracks that housed elite soldiers, and the remains of an extravagant villa. The Jindo details the 5-year excavation process, discusses the historical context of the buildings within the different layers, and discusses some of the reasons the Romans would go about building on top of demolished buildings.

"A river longer than England's Thames flows beneath the Antarctic ice sheet, draining an area the size of France and Germany combined, new research reveals. This under-ice river was discovered using ice-penetrating radar mounted on aircraft. In a series of aerial surveys, researchers discovered a river system snaking 285 miles (460 kilometers) and draining into the Weddell Sea."

"...the Cryogenian, which lasted from about 720 million to 635 million years ago... when Earth experienced the most extreme ice age in its history, including a global freeze known as "Snowball Earth."
Somehow, though, it was also when the first signs of complex animals appeared in the fossil record, left by creatures who set the stage for a golden age of animal life that continues today. In a new study, researchers examined the chemistry of Cryogenian rocks to learn more about this unfamiliar world — including why it was able to not only support animal life, but also seemingly launch it to new heights."
