The lending library that once housed a mummy.
Standing among the books in the Belfast Public Library on Royal Avenue, James Boyce recalls the time when the room was home to the Granger Collection of curios and antiquities. Photographs show how the famous mummy of 'Princess' Takabuti and the magnificent South Cross from Monasterboice held centre stage in a collection that included items ranging from a stuffed lynx to penny farthing bicycles.
The mummy of Lady Takabuti (who was not actually a princess) is still one of the most popular exhibits at the Ulster Museum. It is known that Takabuti was married, between 20 and 30 years of age and lived in Thebes at the end of the 25th Dynasty of Egypt.

This episode of Monitor reveals Jacob Epstein's sculptures as captured in a series of photographs by Anthony Ireland from the Royal College of Art. The pictures are juxtaposed with a rare recording of Epstein discussing his work in which he reflects on some of the themes behind his creations.
Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) was born in New York to parents of Orthodox Jewish descent. He left the United States in 1902 to study in Paris, before moving to London in 1905. He stayed in England and, in December 1910, became a British subject. He was knighted in 1954.

Huw Wheldon introduces this report from writer and critic Simon Raven, who travels to Swansea to converse with Kingsley Amis at the university where he teaches. In this genial interview, Amis recalls his most famous character, Jim Dixon, the protagonist of 'Lucky Jim', and discusses his subsequent writing career, including the novel on which he is currently working (published as 'Take a Girl Like You').
Amis met Philip Larkin in 1941, when they both went up to St John's College, Oxford, to read English. They quickly established a close friendship that lasted throughout their lives (in 1985, Amis gave the address at Larkin's funeral) and had a profound influence on their literary careers.

This tribute to Winston Churchill aired on BBC1 at 8.30am and began the BBC's coverage on the morning of his state funeral. Due to the short time between Churchill's death and the broadcast, the 'Radio Times' produced a special commemorative issue that omitted listings for the Saturday. Instead, a map of the funeral procession's route was published.

The Man With The Rubber Head, or L’Homme à la tête de Caoutchouc, is a French silent film from 1902 directed by Georges Méliès. It features a scientist (played by Méliès himself) who places a living copy of his own head on a table, attaches a pair of bellows to it, and begins to blow air into the head, making it swell like a balloon. The film is a classic example of Méliès mastery of early special effects. To create the illusion of a head which grows in size, he filmed himself moving toward a stationary camera and then superimposed this upon a static shot of the laboratory where the head ballooning experiment takes place.

Film pioneer Edwin S. Porter produced a seven-minute live-action film adaptation called The Dream of a Rarebit Fiend in 1906 for the Edison Company. The Fiend was played by John P. Brawn, who is tormented by imps in his bed, which flies through the air and leaves him hanging from a steeple—a scene similar to that of an early strips that ran on January 28, 1905.
