Whisky Review: SPEYSIDE Single Malts Rundown : 17 bottles in 15 mn !

While I was preparing a picture gathering of bottle per distillery of my main Speyside distilleries collection to answer to answer to a demand on Twitter to celebrate the Spirit of Speyside festival cancelled as many other whisky festivals because of the lockdown, I thought it could have been relevant to shoot an impromptu video about it & give you some quick impressions about each bottle on the table (17!) so I did it & managed to do it under a 15 minutes time format, which I am happy about ! This is my way of paying tribute to all these distilleries all over the world & in Scotland especially which had, for many, not only did an effort to produce hand sanitizers, but also were obliged to close their doors to the public therefore it led a lot of public services, hotels, restaurants, bars & local shops, tourism places & monuments to close as well or be sometimes opened but with a lot of difficulty. All these companies will suffer from this crisis & we have to support them, and even more if they are craft/small and/or family owned companies...For once I will do a premiere at this occasion...Feel free to comment & give your thoughts avec the distilleries, the expressions & the situation as well.

ERRATUM NOTE: As the video was recorded in April, 29, some the infos at the end might be out-of-date now & I'm also sorry for the huge mistake about Chivas Regal (Strathisla review) which is of course not a single malt but a blended whisky ! The more I improvise, the more mistakes...

Minutage : 0:00 Présentation de la distillerie & de ma collection / 23:00 Dégustation de l’ARRAN « Madeira Cask finish » 2018, 50 % Pour cette nouvelle vidéo, j’ai souhaité effectuer un retour au français, afin m’adresser au public français & étranger francophone (non anglophone ou moins à l’aise avec), avec un clin d’oeil double, l’un pour ma famille & mes proches, l’autre pour mes collègues de travail, qu’ils soient amateurs de whisky chevronnés ou débutants, occasionnels., d’ou le rappel de quelques généralités. Après une présentation de la distillerie ARRAN ainsi que de ma collection, je dégusterais pour vous la version « Madeira Cask finish » (affinage en fûts ayant contenu du vin de Madère) mise en bouteille en 2018, et titrant 50 %. Une version qui est, comme la vaste majorité de la production de cette distillerie non filtrée à froid & non colorée par du colorant de type E150a (caramel alimentaire). Cette version est produite à plusieurs milliers de bouteilles, mais je n’ai pas de nombre exact concernant chaque lot. La distillerie ARRAN fut fondée en 1993 (la première distillation eu lieu en 1995) par le groupe Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd (un projet d’ Harold Currie, ancien directeur du groupe Chivas Brothers, qui souhaitait au départ créer un whisky ayant le caractère des single malts de la région du Speyside). Elle est située au nord de l’île d’ARRAN, à Lochranza. ARRAN est une île située au sud-ouest de Glasgow & non loin de la ville de Campbeltown. La production de cette distillerie est d’environ 1,2 millions d’alcool pur par an, et celle-ci est équipée d’une cuve de brassage de type semi-lauteur d’une capacité de 2,5 t, de cuves de fermentation en pin d’Oregon, ainsi que de 4 alambics. Le premier single malt de la distillerie d’ARRAN, un 3 ans d’age, parvint sur le marché en 1998 (suivi par une version sans mention d’âge & des éditions limitées millésimées avec affinages en fûts de type variable), tandis que le premier 10 ans d’âge fut lancé en 2006. Une version brut de fût (« Cask strength ») de 12 ans d’âge apparaît en 2008, puis ce fut le tour en 2010 du 14 ans d’âge (deux références hélas récemment abandonnées). Deux versions tourbées, l’un à 46 % l’autre brut de fût, nommées « Machrie Moor », furent lancées en 2009. En 2019, une vaste plan de reconditionnement et réorganisation de la gamme fut lancé, mais il ne se terminera qu’en 2020, lorsque la série des « Cask finishes » sera elle aussi « relookée ». Pour l’heure, la gamme régulière consiste en les whiskies suivants : Un 10 ans d’âge, un 18 ans & un 21 ans, mais aussi 3 versions sans compte d’âge (« Barrel Reserve » à 43 %; « Quarter Cask /The Bothy » embouteillée à 56,2 % (nouvelle version du « The Bothy ») & le « Sherry Cask /The Bodega » mis en bouteille à 55,8 %. A noter : L’île d’ARRAN en Ecosse (ne pas confondre avec celles d’ARAN en Irlande, un ensemble de 3 îles) reçoit 400 000 visiteurs par an, dont 100 000 pour la distillerie, ce qui en fait la distillerie d’Ecosse la plus visitée, un nombre que les propriétaires de la distillerie souhaitent doubler grâce à l’ouverture de la deuxième distillerie, plus au sud. La nouvelle distillerie du groupe Isle of Arran distillers, nommée LAGG, a ouvert en 2017 au Sud de l’île (non loin du lieu ou une ancienne distillerie était active jusqu’à sa fermeture en 1837), et la première distillation a pu avoir lieu en 2019. Cette distillerie a été créée afin de séparer la production de whiskies tourbés (ayant lieu auparavant durant quelques semaines par an sur le site de Lochranza) du reste, pour ne produire que ceux-ci et ne pas avoir à alterner la production sur Lochranza entre whiskies tourbés et non tourbés, ARRAN, dans sa distillerie du nord de l’île, ne produira donc plus que des single malts non tourbés. La distillerie LAGG, au sud, produira des whiskies tourbés tout d’abord avec de la tourbe « continentale » (de la région d’Aberdeen), puis utilisera dans un futur encore à définir de la tourbe locale. Le taux de phénols tourbés sera de 50 ppm (pour les non connaisseurs cela équivaut à peu près au même taux de phénols tourbés que la distillerie ARDBEG). LAGG utilise une cuve de brassage de 4 tonnes (avec rotation totale des pales internes), une cuve de brassage en pin d’Oregon & 2 grands alambics d’une capacité totale de 10 000 litres chacun. Enfin, pour des raisons de place, ses chais seront modernes (de type rack, palettisés). ERRATUM : J'ai fait une parenthèse sur le manque de rigueur parfois sur les informations que l'on donne sur le whisky. Du coup, cela n’a pas manqué, j’ai commis moi-même une erreur en faisant une généralité abusive. Charité bien ordonnée commençant par soi-même, je la corrige ici : En parlant de la définition du whisky écossais, j’ai évoqué l’orge comme l’un des éléments essentiels, mais les spécialistes auront compris que j’évoquais davantage le single malt (et une orge maltée) que les autres types de whiskies (et notamment le blended whisky, qui contient majoritairement une autre céréale, le maïs !). QUICK TIMING : 0:00 Intro/Challenge presentation / 6:30 My Top 10 Ten List (more detailed timing in the description below) I’ve been recently challenged by my buddy Gert, from Belgian Youtube channel in English « Whisky Lovers Society » for what I did interpret on my side as a « Dream Wishlist » of whiskies that I would like to have in my collection…I thought immediately that I did already cover that topic in a way through my « 15 Exceptional Whiskies to try before you die & Affordable Alternatives » video a few years ago, but not really (& it wasn’t updated anyway), as this comes across more like a wishlist of affordable or not totally crazy priced whiskies, at least for some, so I did a kind of compromise, limiting the amount of high end whiskies in the list to a minimum of 3 or 4 bottles, but, as prices continue to jump up, you’ll never know...There are of course other whiskies that could have be in that list, some starting at 50 € or so, mind you... When I mentioned a Glenfarclas « 160 », I did mistake on the spelling, I obviously didn’t ment that fictive version but rather the « 1960 » vintage in the Family Cask range I did try. This 2020 video focuses on a kind of finishing in particular, “PORT” (at one exception fully matured in Port, the Sullivans Cove). This is a quite complex question & also deeply intricated in the « Cask Filling Strength » question in my opinion, but also related to the « Angel Share » question, as well as Distillation related...I will give you examples of different approaches the whisky brands have about that with bottles from my collection & also mentioning some bottles I don’t have. Honestly it was tough for me to summarize all that I could found about those questions. I could also have mentioned the fact that in the past, only cask strength whisky was sold & not even sold in bottles, but rather always cask by cask. I forgot to mention that often, dilution is also done, of course, for alcohol related taxes, to reduce costs. About very high bottling strength, meaning in the following case a higher cut in distillation, my bottle of Belgian Owl ¨Private Cuvée « The little Monkey…. » aged of over 7 yo, but bearing an abv of 70,4 % (you can see it in one of my videos though).
