Hollywood has seen China as one of the industries most important partners for the past decade – which is why John Cena had to put out a humiliating apology, in Mandarin no less, for the high crime of referring to Taiwan as a country. That didn’t help though, his movie F9, the ninth main installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, bombed in China.

That whole ordeal got Hollywood’s attention, and especially Disney’s attention, as none have more to lose than them. Dominant players in the filmindustry must have seen which way the wind was blowing in advance though, because already on May 21st, weeks before these most recent events, The Hollywood Reporter published an article titled “From Deal Frenzy to Decoupling: Is the China-Hollywood Romance Officially Over?”.
In this video, @AndreEinherjar is joined by writer and producer Kamran Pasha, and together, they will break down this article, go through the beginning and inevitable end of Hollywood’s romance with China; and discuss what the future now might hold instead.
