Unreal Engine 4.20 is finally here and it's loaded with nice new features. The new Niagra particle system has improved, and there have been massive new mobile performance improvements due to Epic's development on Fortnite trickling it's way back in the Unreal Game Engine. Support for Visual Studio 2017 was added, as was Leap beta support and much much more.
(*) --- well, going. But still, good enough! All of the founders of IronSource, the ad and analytics company Unity merged with in 2022, are all leaving Unity within the next 6 months!
Between the ousting of CEO John Riccitiello and now the entirety of the IronSource influence, I finally have some faith in the future of Unity!

This release of Amazon's Lumberyard isn't loaded with features, but the new ones are certainly noteworthy. The biggest (for me) is support for Visual Studio 2017 is finally here. There are also additions to their visual scripting interface, Script Canvas, specifically the addition of variables... an obvious requirement. They also added an RTS game style shortcut system to the mix.

Epic Games just released an awesome new Action Roleplaying Game (ARPG, think Diablo or Dungeon Hunter) example. It's a self contained game demonstrating inventory, skills, weapons, 3rd person controls using both blueprints and C++ code. It's optimized for mobile platforms but still looks very good.

Recently published up to Itch.io, Raylib tools are a collection of GUI and command line based tools for common gamedev tasks like texture packing, font creation, image manipulation, SFX generation and more. Best of all they are free and most do not require using the excellent Raylib framework.

Epic Games/Unreal Engine have just acquired Cubic Motion, a facial animation company behind such titles as HellBlade, SpiderMan and Horizon Zero Dawn, as well as several of Epic's prior GDC presentations. Joining with already acquired 3Lateral, this should result in even more believable facial animation technology in future Unreal Engine versions.
