MARILYN, a tattoo artist from Germany, has spent €30,000 on plastic surgery and tattoos in her quest to be the ‘ultimate vampire Barbie doll’. At only 12 years old, Marilyn started getting into goth clothing and makeup, and soon took inspiration from her favourite vampire dolls. She told Truly: “When I was young, I always wanted to look like a vampire or demon. The inspiration for my first plastic surgery was to look like a doll.” She loved that vampire look so much, she paid for real fangs to be fitted, and admitted she “can’t imagine smiling without them.” In her pursuit of the ‘vampire doll’ image, Marilyn underwent a breast augmentation, liposuction, facelifts and facial injections. Despite all of these procedures, she told Truly she’s absolutely not done yet, adding: “I wanted to look more fake and more plastic, but the doctors made it more natural. Dolls always look perfect, they stay beautiful forever.” Marilyn is set on her next procedure being the Fox Eye Lift, which involves putting dissolvable wires underneath the skin. But, as explained by Marilyn’s cosmetic consultant Dr Freesemann, the procedure could lead to a “bilateral black eye.” Despite the risks involved, the tattoo artist admits everything she does is worth the risk. She told Truly: “I don’t think I’ll ever stop with surgeries or transforming my body. Every surgery brings me more to what I really want to become. ”Social: https://www.instagram.com/mizz.intra/
People have left a definite physical mark on the planet. Sometimes this mark is made accidentally, but many times it is intentional. This occurs even when that purpose may be destructive. This video covers the top ten biggest man-made changes to the natural world.
First on the list is Lake Peigneur in Louisiana. As the video states, when an oil drill hit a salt mine, it turned an eleven feet deep lake into a thirteen hundred feet deep sinkhole. This was devastating to this aquatic habitat.
Next is Betsiboka Estuary in Madagascar. Removal of the native forest has caused massive soil erosion. How massive? 112 tons per acre annually! This is monstrous.
Number eight on the list is Three Gorges Dam in China. Building the world’s largest power station may have been monumental and at the forefront to many people’s visions, but the downside of this destroyed people’s lives. 1.3 million people were displaced because of this.
Number seven is The Scottish Highlands in Scotland. Scotland is known for its natural landscape beauty and breathtaking scenery. The Highlands were once vast forests stretching on for miles without end. They were the epitome of perfection and tranquility. However, they have been razed by farmers and the ancient Romans for the last 3,900 years. Devastation such as this destroys so much more than just a few trees. This cuts much deeper into our beautiful planet, and there is monumental loss on the earth.
Next is the Amazon Deforestation Project in Brazil. This was actually done in the name of science. A massive study was done in order to understand the effects of deforestation. The problem is that in order to complete the study, huge swaths of rainforest were cut down. This seems to be defeating the entire purpose of studying the problems of deforestation.
The Aral Sea in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan is another extreme example. This was once the fourth largest lakes in the world. However, it no longer stands the same. This may be the most visible difference on the list, and it is absolutely gut wrenching to see the location as it stands today. The Aral Sea was drained by the Soviet irrigation policy.
Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah is the world’s deepest open pit mine. If it were a stadium, it could seat nine million people.
Bravo Crater in Bikini Atoll provides another shocking example. The United States government dropped fifteen megatons of TNT on the island. This created a crater that now stands 6,500 feet wide. This seems absolutely heartless on the government’s part, and it shows a blatant disregard for the natural earth.
Second to last on the list is the Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine in Minnesota. This open pit iron mine is three and a half miles wide. It was yielded 690 million tons of iron ore that humans have stolen from the earth for our own purposes.
The last example is the Great Wall of China. This wonder of the world is over 2,300 years old, and it spans more than 13,000 miles.
COUPLE Bri and Sheldon started dating in 2019 after matching on dating app Hinge. Having used a wheelchair for most of her life, Bri had found dating online difficult, with men either being unable to see past the chair - or asking deeply personal questions about her sex life. For a while Bri even hid her disability on social media, hoping that would match her with more guys - but they weren’t the right kind of guys. Now a model and comfortable with her own body, Bri started posting photos of her in her chair on dating profiles. Bri and Sheldon connected over their love of style and fashion and since the pandemic hit have got even closer, moving in together and working as a model/photographer team on some of Bri’s street-style modelling assignments.
A 23-YEAR-OLD with a rare skin condition isn’t letting her disease stop her from doing what she wants - even getting tattoos. Paloma Lira from Sao Paulo, Brazil was born with congenital lamellar ichthyosis, a condition which causes the skin to become extremely dry and scaly. The genetic disease has no cure, and Paloma has to have a strict care routine to soothe her skin - especially during the hotter months. When Paloma was a child, she was frequently bullied for her skin condition - however now as an adult she refuses to allow anything to get in her way. She has even had tattoos and frequently tries out different makeup looks. She told Truly: “I started doing makeup at about nine years old. Makeup can make you feel pretty and wonderful, but it’s what inside that makes a difference. Regardless of the condition you have, regardless of really anything, that can’t stop you from doing anything. Don’t care about people’s opinion." Her mother Sandra said: “For what she’s been through, I would say she’s a true warrior."
A MOTHER of three is learning to love her excess skin after losing 150lbs in two years. Karla Johnson, from Chaska, Minnesota, weighed 352lbs at her heaviest. Since January 2019, Karla has lost 150lbs but has been left with excess skin on her stomach. At times, Karla has felt insecure from her loose skin but hopes by sharing her story she will empower others. Karla told Truly: “It’s harder to exist in this world being bigger - I want other people to know it is fine to look different.” As a child, Karla’s mother was often working long hours so Karla spent her time indoors watching TV. “I was about 200lbs by the sixth grade and by senior year I was 300lbs.” Although Karla often dreamt about losing the weight, she carried a great deal of self-doubt and it wasn’t until she hit rock bottom in 2019 that she decided to really change her lifestyle. Karla cut out sugar and carbohydrates from her diet and began to notice a visible difference. She describes watching the scale go down as “intoxicating”. Karla, who finds the gym an intimidating place, enjoys home workouts and running - she now weighs 210lbs and feels better than ever before. However, she still carries a lot of loose skin in her midsection which can make her feel insecure: “It’s hard when you work so hard to not be exactly what society’s ideal beauty is.” Despite this, Karla says learning to love her skin has bought her “new accomplishments” and believes we should “never let fear stop us.”
